Faithfull Christian on the Road - Religion in the mirror of the written travelogues of the pre-White Mountain Period

Abstract:

V 90. letech 15. století se Martinem Kabátníkem a Janem Hasištejnským z Lobkovic začíná řada pěti písemných relací o výpravách českých cestovatelů do zemí Blízkého východu, uzavřená monumentálním dílem Kryštofa Haranta z Polžic a Bezdružic, vydaným na počátku 17. století. Přestože motivace cestovatelů, jejich intelektuální zázemí i cíle cesty byly rozdílné, spojuje je náboženské přesvědčení a situace, v níž se ocitli. Cestování v jejich dobách nebylo bezpečným podnikem, zvlášť do zemí, jež byly v držení v zásadě nepřátelské mocnosti s odlišným náboženstvím. S výjimkou Václava Vratislava z Mitrovic, který jako vyslanec putoval do bývalé Konstantinopole, lze u zbývajících cestovatelů sledovat touhu navštívit místa spojená s životem Ježíše Krista či historií židovského lidu. Na biblický prostor se proto bude především soustředit i tato práce, jejímž zamýšleným cílem je postihnout projevy víry cestovatelů/poutníků čelících nepohodlí, či dokonce útrapám a zároveň dočasně pobývajících na místech, která byla svědkem biblických dějin. Dvě hlavní tematické osy práce představují navštívené svatyně, resp. zde vykonávané rituály a podoby každodenního života na těchto místech.

Abstract:

A series of five written sessions about Czech travellers to the Middle East began with Martin Kabátník and Jan Hasištejnský of Lobkowicz in the 1590s, concluded by the monumental work of Krištof Harant of Polžice and Bezdružice, published at the beginning of the 17th century. Although the motivations of travellers, their intellectual background and travel destinations were different, they were united by their religious beliefs and situations they were in. Traveling in their days was not a safe business, especially to countries that were held by essentially hostile powers with different religions. With the exception of Václav Vratislav of Mitrovice, who travelled to the former Constantinople as an envoy, it is possible to see in the remaining travellers the desire to visit places associated with the life of Jesus Christ or the history of the Jewish people. Therefore, this thesis is focused primarily on the biblical space and its aim is to capture the manifestations of the faith of travellers/pilgrims confronted with discomfort or hardships while temporarily staying in places witnessing biblical history. The two main thematic axes of the thesis are the shrines visited or the rituals performed there, and the forms of everyday life in these places.
