Chosen Methods of Classification and their Application

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce je zaměřena na využití klasifikačních stromů a ROC křivek v pedagogické praxi. Cílem práce je popsat vybrané metody klasifikace, ukázat jejich praktické použití a ověřit kvalitu klasifikace uchazečů o studium na Masarykově univerzitě v Brně, případně také navrhnout alternativní klasifikační postupy. Podkladem pro analýzu jsou kompletní výsledky přijímacího řízení v akademické roce 2005/2006. Práce je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol. V první je formálně popsána konstrukce klasifikačních stromů, včetně popisu algoritmu CART (Classification and Regression Trees). Obsahem kapitoly je také popis konstrukce klasifikačního stromu na datech z prostředí očního lékařství. Analýza byla provedena ve spolupráci s Fakultní nemocnicí u svaté Anny v Brně (grant NR/8371-3). Druhá část této práce využívá výsledků předchozí kapitoly ke konstrukci regresního stromu. Je uveden pouze stručný princip metody a popis konstrukce regresního stromu na reálných datech získaných v rámci grantového projektu GAČR N. 301/03/D196. Třetí kapitola je věnována ROC křivkám a jejich využití při klasifikaci. Je popsáno parametrické i neparametrické zavedení, základní vlastnosti a různé způsoby odhadu . V druhé části kapitoly je diskutováno využití ROC křivek metodologii CART a jsou navrhnuty dvě varianty implementace ROC křivek do konstrukce klasifikačních a regresních stromů. V poslední části disertační práce je provedeno statistické zpracování a vyhodnocení klasifikace uchazečů, kteří absolvovali přijímací řízení na MU v Brně v období březen až září 2005. Pozornost je soustředěna na konstrukci klasifikačního stromu navrženého na základě výsledků shlukové analýzy, a také na ověření klasifikace uchazečů ROC křivkou. Závěrem je navržen alternativní způsob využití v současné době používaného testu studijních předpokladů.

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on the use of clasification trees and ROC curves for using in pedagogy. There are described some selected methods of classification and show their practical use in verifying the quality of grading the applicants who want to study at Masaryk University in Brno. Moreover, there are suggested some alternative methods of grading if necessary. The work is based on the complete results of the entrance exams in the school year 2005/2006. The dissertation is divided into four chapters. There is the formal description of the construction of classification trees including the description of the CART (Classification and Regression Trees) algorithm in chapter number one. There is also a description of the construction of the classification tree which is based on the data from ophthalmology in this chapter. This analysis was done in cooperation with the University Hospital U Svate Anny in Brno (grant NR/8371-3). In the second part of the work the results from the previous chapter are used to construct a regression tree. There is just a simple principle and a description of a construction of a regression tree based on real data which were obtained during the grant GAČR N. 301/03/D196. In the third chapter the ROC curves are dealt with and their use for classification is discussed. There are described the parametric and non-parametric implementations, basic properties and different ways of estimation. In the second part the use of ROC curves in the CART methodology is discussed and there are suggested two possibilities how to implement the ROC curves into the construction of classification and regression trees. In the last chapter of the dissertation I statistically process and evaluate the grading of the applicants who took the entrance exams at Masaryk University in Brno between March and September 2005. The main emphasis is put on the construction of the classification tree which was suggested on the basis of the results of the aggregate analysis. Moreover, the grading of the applicants is verified by the means of ROC curve. In the end a different use of the general study prerequisities test which is being used is sugested.
