When Red Cowboys Fight for New Order: „Eastern“ – Genre as Processual Phenomenon in Cinema seen by Wittgensteinian Family Resemblance Concept

Abstract:

Filmové žánry jsou na jedné straně často vnímány jako jasné, pevně stanovené kategorie, avšak na straně druhé jsou žánry velmi nejednoznačné a vyslovit jejich přesnou definici je komplikovaný proces. O to víc se taková definice stává neuchopitelnou, kdy narážíme na velmi odlišná pojetí žánrové tvorby i různé definice žánrů při výzkumu kinematografií odlišných kultur. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat žánr „easternů“, který se objevil v sovětské kinematografii koncem 60. let a zaznamenal rozmach mezi 70.- 80. lety. Easterny, jakožto dobrodružně patetické interpretace tématu ruské občanské války, ukážou, jakými způsoby se o pojmu žánr v SSSR uvažovalo. Ve svém textu chci nejen upozornit na rozpor mezi obecně vžitým dělením na teoretické a historické žánry, ale poukáži i na problematickou snahu žánr jednoznačně fundovat. Tvrdím, že 1) nelze uvažovat o žánrech jako o esencialisticky vyměřených pojmech, a 2) je nutné vystoupit ze zavedených vzorců žánrových teorií nastavených převážně anglo-americkým badatelským prostředím. Domnívám se, že je nutné uvažovat o žánrech jako o pojmech získávajících svůj skutečný význam teprve způsobem jejich reálného použití – v praxi. Proto nelze vyměřit jednu konkrétní definici žánrů, nýbrž je nutné je uchopit jako procesuální kategorie mezi nimiž existují rodové podobnosti. Ve svém výzkumu chci porozumět způsobům, jakými sovětská diskuse o filmu ovlivnila rozvoj své vlastní žánrové kinematografie. Zajímá mě nejen kulturně-historický kontext, ale i způsoby artikulace konkrétních požadavků pro filmovou tvorbu, budovatelský étos, vztah státu a kinematografie a postupný vznik easternového narativu. Práce bude pracovat s vzájemným vztahem dominantních myšlenkových proudů v Sovětském svazu; formalismem, revolučním romantismem, marxistickou dialektikou nebo esteticko-ideologickými požadavky socialistického realismu.

Abstract:

On the one hand film genres are frequently perceived as clear and firmly determined categories, but on the other hand genres they are extremely ambiguous and articulating their exact definition is highly complicated process. Moreover, such definitions become inapplicable when we come across different approaches to genre cinema when exploring cinemas of various cultural environments. This master thesis aims to study ‘Easterns’, a genre which appeared in Soviet cinema in the late 1960s and experienced its boom between 1970s and 1980s. This case study of adventurous and pathos-driven interpretations of Russian Civil War, will show the ways of perceiving and understanding genre phenomena in the USSR. In my text I will bring a discrepancy between theoretical and historical approaches to genres into focus as well as highlight their problematical attempt to find a solid foundation for genre definition. I argue that 1) genres cannot be understood as essentiallistically determined concepts, and 2) it is necessary to leave the established genre theory patterns set mainly by Anglo-American point of view. On a contrary I believe it is necessary to consider genres as concepts that acquire their meaning by their actual use in language – i. e. in practice. Therefore, it is not possible to determine one particular definition of genres but it is necessary to comprehend them as processual categories with family resemblances among them. My research will study the ways in which Soviet discussion on film influenced the development of local genre cinema. I will be interested in cultural and historical discourses as well as forms of articulating specific requirements for filmmaking, mass ethos, the relationship between state and cinema and gradual formation of Eastern narrative. The thesis will work with mutual relationships among theoretical approaches dominant in Soviet Union; formalism, revolutionary romanticism, Marxist dialectics or aesthetic-ideological requirements of socialist realism.
