Differences in working with printed and digital school atlas at pre-service teachers: eye-tracking study

Abstract:

Cílem práce je srovnat práci studentů s tištěným a digitálním školním atlasem od nakladatelství Kartografie Praha, a. s. Hlavní výzkumnou metodou je metoda eye tracingu, která je doplněna rozhovory s účastníky výzkumu. V rámci metody eye - trackingu studenti plní připravené úlohy s tištěným i digitálním atlasem, sledován je např. čas plnění úloh, prvky atlasu, na které studenti zaměřují pozornost apod. Následný rozhovor se zaměřuje na jejich strategie zvolené při řešení úloh. Výzkumná skupina čítá 27 studentů navazujícího magisterského studia učitelství geografie jako budoucích uživatelů těchto atlasů. Studenti hodnotili jako jednodušší práci s tištěným atlasem i přesto, že výsledky práce stištěným a digitálním atlasem dopadli prakticky stejně. Práce tak došla k závěru, že studenti dokážou pracovat s atlasem stejně dobře, bez ohledu na zvolené médium.

Abstract:

The aim of the work is to compare the work of students with a printed and digital school atlas from the publishing house Kartografie Praha, a. s. The main research method is the eye tracing method, which is supplemented by interviews with research participants. As part of the eye - tracking method, students perform prepared tasks with a printed and digital atlas, such as the time of completion of tasks, elements of the atlas on which students focus attention, etc. The subsequent interview focuses on their strategies chosen in solving tasks. The research group counts 27 students of the follow - up master's degree in geography teaching as future users of these atlases. Students rated it as easier to work with a printed atlas, even though the results of working with a printed and digital atlas turned out practically the same. The work concluded that students can work with the atlas just as well, regardless of the chosen medium.
