Iconography of St. Wenceslas until the beginning of the 13th century on coins, book painting and seals

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce představí ikonografii svatého Václava na mincích, konkrétně na denárech do brakteátové reformy, která se odehrála na začátku 13. století. Svatý Václav má mnoho podob pro zobrazování a hojná většina je v mé práci zahrnuta a srovnána s knižní malbou a pečetěmi té doby. Součástí textu jsou i problémy analýzy o pravosti světce, jelikož na většině starších mincích se nedá jeho identifikace zcela potvrdit. Dále jsem ve své práci zahrnula všechny vládce českých zemí, kteří se jakýmkoliv způsobem zasloužili o zobrazování zemského světce svatého Václava od dob vlády Břetislava I. (kolem roku 1050), do panování Přemysla Otakara I. a zavedení jeho brakteátové reformy (kolem roku 1210).

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis will present the iconography of St Wenceslas on coins, specifically on denarii prior to the bracteal reform at the beginning of the 13th century. St Wenceslas was depicted in many forms, and majority of those are included in my work and compared with similar works of art. This work also includes problems of analysis of the authenticity of the saint, as on most older coins his identity cannot be fully confirmed. Further, in my work I included those rulers of the Czech lands, who in various ways contributed to the depiction of St. Wenceslas starting from the reign of Bretislav I. (around 1050), to the reign of Premysl Otakar I. and the introduction of his bracteal reform (around 1210).
