The effects of climate changes on natural hazards insurance for industry and entrepreneurs

Abstract:

V této práci se zabývám analýzou vlivu klimatických změn na pojištění živelních katastrofických rizik, zejména pak na pojištění majetku v průmyslu a podnikatelů. V první části práce definuji základní pojmy používané v pojišťovnictví a zajišťovnictví. Současně podávám stručnou charakteristiku pojištění průmyslu a podnikatelů včetně specifikace jednotlivých druhů pojištění živelních katastrofických rizik. Druhá část práce se věnuje vývoji klimatických změn včetně změny globálního klimatu za posledních několik let a jejich důsledkům v podobě rostoucích počtů nepředvídatelných živelných katastrof. Třetí část se zaměřuje na problematiku zmírnění ekonomických škod pojišťoven a s tím související přesun živelního katastrofického rizika na zajistitele a soupojistitele. Dále analyzuje dopady klimatických změn na přijetí živelního katastrofického rizika do pojištění. V poslední, čtvrté části jsou uvedeny příkladové studie pojištění živelních katastrofických rizik před rokem 2002 a po roce 2002. Rok 2002 byl zvolen jako přelomový, neboť v něm došlo k velké přírodní katastrofě (povodně) s vysokým pojistným plněním, po které pojišťovny změnily své podmínky pojištění.

Abstract:

In this work I analyse the effects of climate changes on natural hazards risks, especially the effects on insurance of industrial and entrepreneurs' property. In the first part of the work I define basic concepts used in insurance and reinsurance. Also, I provide brief characteristics of industrial and entrepreneurs' property insurance, including specification of individual types of natural hazards risks insurance. The second part of this work is devoted to the developments in climate changes, including the change in global climate in recent years, and to their consequences in the form of growing number of unpredictable natural catastrophes. The third part is focused on how insurers might moderate economic losses, for example by transferring natural catastrophes risks on reinsurer and co-insurer. Further I analyse the impacts of climate changes on accepting natural catastrophes risks into insurance. In the last, fourth part of this work case studies of natural catastrophes risks insurance are presented in distinction between period before year 2002 and period after year 2002, The year 2002 was chosen as a turning point because then the big natural disaster took place (floods). As a result of high insurance losses from this particular disaster, the Czech insurers modified the insurance conditions.
