Victorian and Domestic Ideology in Maria S. Cummins’s The Lamplighter, Henry James’s Daisy Miller and Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth

Abstract:

Tato práce je studií tří významných postav americké literatury devatenáctého a počátku dvacátého století: Gertrude Flintové (Lampář a jeho schovanka od Marie Cumminsové), Daisy Millerové (Daisy Millerová od Henryho Jamese) a Lily Bartové (Dům radovánek od Edith Whartonové). Jejím cílem je porovnat je s viktoriánským ženským ideálem, stejně jako s modelovou hrdinkou sentimentální literatury. Za tímto účelem je, po krátkém úvodu, druhá kapitola věnována popisu viktoriánského a domácího ideálu ženského chování. Třetí, čtvrtá a pátá kapitola se pak zaměřují na Gertrude Flintovou, Daisy Millerovou a Lily Bartovou, v tomto pořadí, ve vztahu k těmto dvěma ideálům. Závěr nakonec ukazuje, že i když ani jedna z těchto postav neodpovídá viktoriánským normám, jejich postavení ve vztahu k těm domácím je odlišné. Gertrude Flintová, hlavní postava jednoho z nejtypičtějších představitelů sentimentální literatury, je konvenční sentimentální hrdinkou. Na druhé straně, Daisy Millerová je v kompletní opozici k tomuto ideálu a Lily Bartová zůstává někde uprostřed.

Abstract:

This MA diploma thesis provides a study of three notable characters of the American literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth century: Gertrude Flint (Maria S. Cumminsʼs The Lamplighter), Daisy Miller (Henry Jamesʼs Daisy Miller) and Lily Bart (Edith Whartonʼs The House of Mirth). Its aim is to compare them to the Victorian feminine ideal of the period, as well as to the model heroine of domestic fiction. For this purpose, after a brief introduction, the second chapter is dedicated to the description of the Victorian and the domestic ideal of a woman’s behavior. The third, fourth and fifth chapters then focus on Gertrude Flint, Daisy Miller and Lily Bart respectively, in relation to these two ideals. Finally, the conclusion shows that while neither of these characters conforms to the Victorian norms, their position in relation to the domestic ones is different. Gertrude Flint, the main character of one of the most typical representatives of the domestic fiction, is a conventional domestic heroine. On the other hand, Daisy Miller is in a complete opposition to the domestic ideal, and Lily Bart remains somewhere in between.
