US Foreign Policy Towards Israel in 2009–2017

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce se zabývá zahraniční politikou Spojených států amerických vůči Izraeli v letech 2009 až 2017, tedy během obou funkčních období prezidenta Baracka Obamy. Cílem práce je zhodnocení zahraniční politiky USA vůči Izraeli a jejího vlivu na vzájemné americko-izraelské vztahy v tomto časovém úseku. První část, kde jsou vysvětleny základní principy tvorby zahraniční politiky v USA, slouží jako teoretické východisko celé práce. Pozornost je věnována především jednotlivým složkám moci, tedy exekutivě, legislativě a jurisdikci, a jejich pravomocím. Další kapitoly jsou deskriptivně-analytického charakteru, přičemž druhá se zabývá samotným postojem a jednáním Obamovy administrativy v záležitostech izraelsko-palestinského konfliktu a íránského jaderného programu. Třetí závěrečná kapitola analyzuje roli jiných aktérů, tedy izraelské lobby, veřejného mínění a médií, v těchto záležitostech. Závěrem jsou dedukovány spojitosti mezi jednáním prezidenta, kroky amerického Kongresu, činností izraelské lobby a naposledy i aktivitou médií a působením veřejného mínění.

Abstract:

The presented bachelor thesis deals with the foreign policy of the United States of America towards Israel in the years 2009 to 2017, thus during both terms of President Barack Obama. The aim of this work is to evaluate the US foreign policy towards Israel and its influence on mutual US-Israeli relations in this period. The first part, which explains the basic principles of foreign policy-making in the USA, serves as a theoretical basis for the whole work. Attention is paid mainly to individual branches of power, i.e. the executive, legislation and jurisdiction and their powers. The next chapters are of a descriptive-analytical nature, while the second deals with the very attitude and actions of the Obama administration in matters of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iran's nuclear program. The third final chapter analyzes the role of other actors, i.e. the Israeli lobby, public opinion and the media, in these matters. Finally, the links between the president's actions, the actions of the US Congress, the activities of the Israeli lobby and, last but not least, the activity of the media and public opinion are deduced.
