The possibilities of epoxidation of esters synthesis from vegetable oils

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá epoxidací různých esterů řepkového a slunečnicového oleje, a jejich následnou analýzou. Teoretická část je primárně zaměřena na přeměny olejů a esterů na biomaziva. Jsou popsány (i) reakční podmínky epoxidace, (ii) použití možných katalyzátorů a (iii) vybrané analytické metody, kterými se zjišťovaly vlastnosti epoxidovaných esterů. Experimentální část popisuje transesterifikaci řepkového a slunečnicového oleje pomocí různých alkoholů (methanol, ethanol a butanol), jejich následnou epoxidaci a analytické stanovování. Ke zjištění vlastností epoxidovaných esterů byla použita HPLC, stanovení jodového čísla, měření viskozity a obsahu vody. Bylo zjištěno, epoxidace proběhla u všech esterů, ale u estery z alkoholů s více uhlíky se epoxidují podstatně hůře (za stejných podmínek), než estery z nižších alkoholů a mají vyšší viskozitu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the epoxidation of various esters of rapeseed and sunflower oil, and their subsequent analysis. The theoretical part is primarily focused on the conversion of oils and esters into biolubricants. (I) epoxidation reaction conditions are described, (ii) the use of possible catalysts and (iii) selected analytical methods for determining the properties of epoxidized esters. The experimental part describes the transesterification of rapeseed and sunflower oil using various alcohols (methanol, ethanol and butanol), their subsequent epoxidation and analytical determination. HPLC, determination of iodine value, measurement of viscosity and water content were used to determine the properties of epoxidized esters. It was found that epoxidation took place for all esters, but for esters from alcohols with more carbons they epoxidize significantly worse (under the same conditions) than esters from lower alcohols and have a higher viscosity.
