The Education in José Hernández's Martín Fierro

Abstract:

Martín Fierro is considered a masterpiece in Gaucho literature: this narrative poetry, consisting of two parts accompanied by short texts in prose, is a very successful protest against social developments triggered in 19th century by liberally-oriented government which was led by Faustino Domingo Sarmiento. The goal of the development was to improve level of education amongst Argentinian population, and the effort to accomplish this goal also lead to some controversial measures, as for instance the controlled elimination of Gauchos and their substitution for immigrants coming from Europe. These measures were based on the statement that Gauchos are uneducable, naturally barbarian and thus they hinder the development. The main goal of the diploma thesis is investigative work concerning Martín Fierro’s book through text analysis. The analysis focuses on occurrences of education topic representing a means of protest which José Hernandez sent out to Argentinian government to protect Gauchos and to enhance their reputation in the eyes of Argentinian people.

Martín Fierro je považován za vrcholné dílo gaučovské literatury: toto poema stávající ze dvou částí proložených krátkými texty v próze je velmi úspěšným protestem proti společenským proměnám iniciovaným v polovině 19. století liberálně orientovanou vládou v čele s Faustinem Domingem Sarmientem, které si kladly za úkol pozdvihnout úroveň vzdělanosti argentinské populace a jejichž odhodlání k tomuto úkolu je vedlo i k velmi kontroverzním krokům, jako byla řízená eliminace gaučů a jejich nahrazení přistěhovalci z Evropy. Tyto kroky se opíraly o tvrzení, že gaučové jsou nevzdělatelní, od přírody barbarští a tudíž stojí v cestě pokroku Argentiny. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl investigativní práci s textem knihy Martín Fierro, ve kterém analyzuje výskyty tématu vzdělání, jakožto nástroje protestu, který José Hernández vyslal argentinské vládě za účelem ochrany gaučů a nápravě jejich reputace u ostatních argentinských obyvatel.
