Qualitative differences in spatial orientation between men and women (PoC)

Abstract:

Tato práce byla zaměřena na kvalitativní rozdíly v prostorové orientaci mezi muži a ženami a na možnosti měření těchto rozdílů pomocí eye-trackingových brýlí. Účastníci měli za úkol opustit budovu tak, jak by ji pravděpodobně opustili při rozeznění poplašné sirény. Zjištěné výsledky jsou v souladu s dosavadními výzkumy (vzhledem k typu studie a nízkému počtu participantů však není většina z nich statisticky signifikantní). Muži byli během orientace jistější a úspěšnější. Jejich fixace byly kratší a bylo jich méně. Ženy spoléhaly více na cedule než na vlastní znalosti o prostředí a měly celkově delší a rozmanitější fixace. Na schopnost orientace měli vliv i míra obeznámenosti s prostředím a afordance průchodů. Nakonec byly určeny přednosti a limity zvolené analýzy včetně stanovení nejednoznačných orientačních bodů, jejichž zapojení do statistiky by mohlo narušit výsledky studie.

Abstract:

This study is focused on qualitative differences in spatial orientation between men and women and on possibilities of measuring such differences with eye-tracking glasses. Participants were asked to leave the building in a way they would probably have done it when heard the sound of alarm. Results are in compliance with previous studies (considering the type of study and a small sample, they are not statistically significant). Men were more successful and self-assured during the orientation. They had fewer and shorter fixations. Women tended to depend more on signs than on their own knowledge about the building. Their fixations were longer and more diverse. Level of familiarity with the location and affordances of passageways had impact on some aspects of orientation. Finaly advantages and limits of eye-tracking analysis were stated, including definition of ambiguous landmarks, whose inclusion in statistics could disrupt the outcome of study.
