Revitalizing Indigenous Languages: A South African Perspective

Abstract:

At the beginning of this thesis I tackle the problem of language death globally, slowly moving to the death of indigenous languages in South Africa in particular, of course, with regard to native languages of bordering countries. First, I had to conduct research not only into historical development of the studied languages but also into their mutual interactions and take into consideration significant factors leading to their gradual death in order to be able to draw proper conclusions and thus explain the current situation of officially recognized languages in South Africa. Out of all eleven officially recognized languages, I decided to focus only on three most widely spoken ones, namely Afrikaans, Xhosa and Zulu, in order to conduct an analysis of the most important revitalization programmes of indigenous languages in South Africa.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se nejprve zabývá celosvětovým úbytkem zejména nativních jazyků a dále pak konkrétněji nativních jazyků v Jižní Africe s ohledem na jazyky v sousedících zemích. Abych mohl vyvodit patřičné závěry a objasněnit tím současnou situaci oficiálně uznaných jazyků v Jižní Africe, tak jsem se nejprve musel zaměřit jak na historický vývoj jazyků a jejich interakci, tak i na faktory vedoucí k jejich vymírání či obnově. Vzhledem k nejhojnějšímu zastoupení jazyka Afrikaans, Xhosa a Zulu na území Jižní Afriky jsem se rozhodl soustředit se právě na tyto tři jazyky a pokusit se provést analýzu nejdůležitějších revitalizačních programů zaměřených na jejich podporu.
