Teilhard de Chardin and science

Abstract:

Myšlení Teilharda de Chardin významně ovlivnilo filosofii, teologii a vědu 20. a 21. století. V díle Vesmír a lidstvo (Le Phénoméne Humain) je představena jeho tzv. hyperfyzika - "teorie", která se pokouší vědecky popsat roli člověka v přírodě. V této práci je posouzena udržitelnost Teilhardova tvrzení, že jeho kniha je "vědecká zpráva". Po shrnutí dosavadní diskuse je zdůvodněno, proč by hyperfyzika měla být klasifikována jako "vědecká fenomenologie", "vědění" či "Wissenschaft" (nikoliv věda v přísném smyslu - "science"). Druhý cíl práce je zdůraznit ty Teilhardovy ideje, které se ukázaly být plodné a jsou ve 21. století stále aktuální: koncept noosféry, Teilhardova teorie vědomí, měření komplexity, Teilhardovy paleontologické a geologické objevy, úvahy o prvotním hříchu, anticipace hypotézy Gaia aj. Posledním a nejdůležitějším bodem této práce je představení Teilhardovy filosofie vědy. Vize totální antropologie, originální eugenická koncepce, náboženství vědy, mystika vědy, filosofie techniky, filosofie výzkumu - to jsou jen některá z rozvíjených témat. Je ukázáno, že Teilhardova filosofie vědy je specifickou a dosud přehlíženou částí jeho spisů. Je také upozorněno na podobnost myšlení Teilharda de Chardin a současného českého filosofa Zdeňka Neubauera ohledně tzv. náboženství vědy.

Abstract:

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's thoughts influenced significantly the philosophy, theology and science of the 20th and 21st century. In The Phenomenon of Man (Le Phénoméne Humain) his so-called hyperphysics is presented - "a theory" which tries to describe scientifically the role of man in nature. Justifiability of Teilhard's assertion that his book is "a scientific treatise" is investigated in this thesis. After summarizing the existing discussion I am giving reasons why hyperphysics should be classified as "scientific phenomenology", "knowledge discipline" or "Wissenschaft" (not "science" in its common meaning). The second aim of my work is to emphasize some ideas of Teilhard de Chardin which proved to be fruitful and which are still topical in the 21st century: the concept of noosphere, Teilhard's philosophy of mind, the complexity measurement, Teilhard's paleontological and geological discoveries, thinking about the original sin, anticipation of the Gaia hypothesis etc. The introduction of Teilhard's philosophy of science is the last (but not least) point of my thesis. The vision of total anthropology, the authentic eugenic conception, the religion of science, the mysticism of science, the philosophy of technology, the philosophy of research - these are just some of the topics developed in this work. Here it is shown that Teilhard's philosophy of science is a specific and so far ignored part of his writings. The similarity of Teilhard de Chardin's thoughts and Zdeněk Neubauer's opinions of the religion of science is noticed.
