Abstract:

Toni Morrisonová a Gloria Naylorová jsou současné afroamerické spisovatelky. Ve svých knihách, kterými chtěji obohatit americkou literaturu, popisují společenskou situaci Afroameričanů v druhé polovině 20.století. Autorky pojednávají o kontroverzních tématech týkajících se afroamerické společnosti. Ačkoli otroctví bylo zrušeno více než sto let před vydáním jejich knih a Afroameričané mezitím dosáhli rovnoprávnosti, historie Afroameričanů stále ovlivňuje jejich postavení v americké společnosti. Morrisonová a Naylorová se zabývají rozložením sociálních tříd v americké společnosti, na jejímž vrcholu stále převažují bílí američané. Afroameričané jsou nadále znevýhodněni společenskými normami, které reflektují hodnoty západní materialistické společnosti. Vzhledem k tomu, že postavení afroameričanů je více či méně podmíněno přizpůsobením se a přijmutím hodnot materialistické a individualistické americké společnosti, Afroameričané musí volit mezi těmito hodnotami a hodnotami svých předků. Většina Afroameričanů, v knihách Morrisonové a Naylorové, podlehá nátlaku bílé společnosti a přijímá jejich normy natolik, že tyto normy prosazuje i v afroamerické společnosti. Postavy z románů Morrisonové a Naylorové jsou natolik odlišné, že představují mnoho perspektiv a způsobů jak se západními normami naložit. Především se však Morrisonová a Naylorová snaží poukázat na rozdíly mezi bílou a afroamerickou společností a na to, jak přijetí západních norem může narušit integritu afroamerické společnosti.

Abstract:

Toni Morrison and Gloria Naylor are contemporary African American female writers. While their novels depict the contemporary issues within African American communities in the second half of the 20th century, Morrison and Naylor address the lack of African American female perspective in the American literature. These women authors comment upon controversial issues among the African American society caused by the history of the African Americans in the United States. Although slavery has been abolished for more than a century and the African Americans are able to exercise equal legal rights, the history of the American society still impacts their position within the American society. Morrison and Naylor deal with the social hierarchy that is still widely dominated by the mainstream society and its consequent effects on the African American lives. The imposition of the mainstream values on the African Americans has caused tension not only between the two societies, but also among the African Americans themselves. Through the variety of characters, Morrison and Naylor show how compliance to the mainstream values improves one’s social standing. Although majority of the African American characters desires to be accepted into the mainstream society, there are characters that are proud of their African origin and prefer their own way of life. By creating such characters and telling their stories, Morrison and Naylor aim to emphasize the difference of the two societies as well as they want to point out how destructive the integration of mainstream values might be for the African American society.
