Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá poviedkou Vianočná koleda, ktorú napísal anglický spisovateľ a spoločenský kritik viktoriánskej éry Charles Dickens. Zameriava sa na autora a umožňuje náhľad do jeho života od útleho detstva až do čias, keď sa stal úspešným spisovateľom. Cieľom práce je predložiť skutočnosť, že Vianočná koleda môže byť považovaná za dielo, ktoré poukazuje na nedostatky vtedajšej spoločnosti a zdôrazňuje dôležitosť dobročinnosti. Tieto argumenty sú rozvinuté v samostatnej kapitole, ktorá poskytuje detailnú analýzu Vianočnej koledy. Práca taktiež predstavuje zvyšné štyri knihy s vianočnou tematikou, ktoré Dickens napísal. Všetky knihy dokopy spadajú pod jeden spoločný názov – Vianočné knihy. Práca okrem iného predkladá čitateľovi vývoj Vianoc vo viktoriánskom Anglicku a skúma či, a do akej miery, Dickens so svojou Vianočnou koledou prispel k rozširovaniu obľúbenosti tohto sviatku.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the story A Christmas Carol written by an English writer and social critic of Victorian era, Charles Dickens. The thesis focuses on the writer himself and provides insight into his life from earliest childhood up until the time he became a popular novelist. The aim of this thesis is to show that A Christmas Carol can be considered a story that depicts the defects of humanity and emphasizes the importance of charity. These arguments are elaborated in a separate chapter which in detail analyses A Christmas Carol. This thesis also presents the other four books with a Christmas theme that have been written by Dickens. All of them are referred to under one common name – Christmas Books. In addition, the thesis provides the reader with an introduction to the development of Christmas in Victorian England and examines if, and to what extent, Dickens and his A Christmas Carol contributed to the expanding popularity of the holiday.
