Estimation of cross-linking degree of cable insulation

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce předkládá ucelený přehled o izolačních materiálech polymerního a kompozitního charakteru, které se používají jako primární izolace kabelů či jako materiál pro jejich opláštění. Dále poskytuje fyzikálně chemické principy během vzniku vazeb u síťovaných termoplastů zvlášť se zaměřením na nízkohustotní XLPE síťovaného pomocí vinyltrimethoxysilanu. Druhá část této práce podává přehled o nejpoužívanějších technologických postupech pro síťování LDPE, které je užíváno v kabelovém průmyslu. Třetí část je zaměřena na hledání nových způsobů stanovení úrovně síťování, které jsou porovnávány s konvenčními metodami, jako je extrakční metoda dle ASTM D2675 - 11 a ČSN EN 579. Ve čtvrté části - experimentální jsou teoretické předpoklady dále rozvíjeny se zaměřením na metody fenomenologického charakteru jako hot set test, mechanická zkouška tahem v různých teplotách (23, 50, 55 °C) a také zaměřením na strukturální metody jako: chemická extrakce XLPE v roztoku xylenu a stanovení alfa, beta přechodů pomocí DMA. Metody byly testovány a optimalizovány pro dvě rozdílné skupiny materiálů užívané jako izolace jader o průměru 1,75 mm používané pro nízkonapěťové aplikace, které byly dále rozděleny do pěti podskupin v závislosti na době expozice iniciující síťovací proces. První skupina je polymerní směs založená na LDPE (3% katalyzátoru), která je schopna síťovat při vystavení vlhkosti a teplotám mezi 60 - 70 °C. Druhá skupina je silanem zesíťovaná polymerní směs založená na LDPE (3 - 5% katalyzátoru) pro velmi pružné izolace. Z výsledku je patrná korelace výsledků mezi stupněm zesítění dle extrakční metody a změnou mechanických parametrů, zvláště alfa přechodů měřených pomocí dynamické mechanické analýzy.

Abstract:

This thesis provides an overview of insulation materials, which are used as cable insulation or sheath. The work provides an introduction to physical-chemical principles of the creation of secondary bonds on the polymer structure focusing on low density XLPE cross-linked by the vinyltrimethoxysilane. The second part of this work gives an overview of the techniques often used for rapid cross-linking, which are utilised in the cable industry. The third and last part of the thesis is aimed at looking for new methods to identify the degree of cross-linked LDPE. These are compared with conventional methods for the determination of degree of cross-linking, such as the extraction method according to ASTM D2675 - 11 and ČSN EN 579. The fourth part of this thesis is based on theoretical assumptions developed by experiments with focus on methods of phenomenological character, such as hot set test and mechanical stress test in different temperatures (23°, 50°, 55° C). It also focuses on the structural methods of chemical extraction of cross-linked polymers by solution of xylene and determination of alfa, beta transition temperature using by the DMA. Methods have been tested and optimised for two different groups of materials used as insulation of the core (d = 1,75 mm)These were used for the low-voltage applications, which were further divided into five subgroups, depending on the time of exposure to the cross-linking process. The first group of materials is a polymeric mixture based on LDPE (3 % catalyst), which is able to cross-link by exposure to a humid medium and temperature between 60 - 70 °C. The second group is a silane cross-linked polymeric mixture based on LDPE (3 - 5% catalyst) for very flexible insulations. The results show the significant correlations between the results of the degree of cross-linking, measured by the extraction method and change of mechanical properties especially alfa-relaxation temperature measured by the DMA.
