Testing the albumen photographs stability towards hydrogels

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is devoted to testing the stability of the albumen photography against hydrogels, where xanthan gum was chosen as the gel matrix. Although much data from the food industry is available, it remains unexplored in the examination of the use of water gels in the context of cultural heritage protection. The application of xanthan gels in specific time ranges, consulted with conservators, took place on newly created model samples with Dmin. and Dmax. image density, but also historical albumen samples from the reference collection of the Department of Conservation and Restoration of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Objective data processing took place before and after the application of gels to samples. The emphasis was to observe the color immutability, the extent of the crackelage of the joint material and the remains of residues from xanthan gels on the surface. Therefore, as methods, we used image analysis mediated by macro photographs from an optical microscope, which were processed in the Fiji/ImageJ2 computer program, observation of historical photographs with UV-light. Also, colorimetry for the objective processing of color input and FTIR spectroscopy for the identification of the main components of coating materials and possible residues. The collected processed data showed a high potential in use of xanthan gels as a medium for cleaning albumen photographs, which are very sensitive to extensive moisture and water.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca sa venuje testovaniu stability albumínovej fotografie voči hydrogélom, kde bola zvolená ako gélová matica xantánová guma. Aj keď je o nej k dispozícií veľa údajov zpotravinárskeho priemyslu, vskúmaní použitia vodných gélov vkontexte ochrany kultúrneho dedičstva je ešte naďalej neprebádaná. Aplikácia xantánových gélov v konkrétnych časových rozhraniach konzultovanými s reštaurátormi, prebehla na novovytvorených modelových vzorkách s Dmin. a Dmax. hustotou obrazu, ale aj na historických albumínových vzorkách z referenčnej zbierky katedry reštaurovania Vysokej školy výtvarných umení v Bratislave. Objektívne spracovanie dát prebiehalo pred a po aplikácií gélov na vzorky. Dôraz sa kládol na pozorovanie farebnej nemennosti, rozsahu krakeláže spojového materiálu, pozostatkov rezíduí z xantánových gélov na povrchu. Preto sme ako metódy použili obrazovú analýzu sprostredkovanú makrofotografiami z optického mikroskopu, ktoré boli spracované v počítačovom programe Fiji/ImageJ2, pozorovanie historických fotografií UV -svetlom. Taktiež kolorimetriu na objektívne spracovanie farebného vnemu a FTIR spektroskopiu pre identifikáciu hlavných zložiek povlakových materiálov, prípadných rezíduí. Nazbierané spracované dáta preukázali vysoký potenciál xantánových gélov, ktoré by v budúcnosti mohli slúžiť ako médium pre čistenie albumínových fotografií citlivých na vlhkosť a čistenie vodou.
