Sabotage: Film Analysis of Hitchcockian Thriller which is not a Hitchcockian Thriller

Abstract:

Sabotáž: rozbor hitchcockovského thrilleru, který není hitchcockovským thrillerem Tato analýza je zaměřena na film Sabotáž Alfreda Hitchcocka. Jako metodologický základ využívá knihu Davida Bordwella Narration in the Fiction Film. Film je považován za část Hitchcockovy britské thrillerové série a byl opakovaně mylně popisován jako thriller, ačkoliv se strukturou odlišuje od ostatních pěti filmů. Využívá sice napětí, důležitého prvku Hitchcockových žánrových filmů, ale scény pracující s napětím se v něm objeví pouze dvakrát a jejich přítomnost je motivována cílem poskytnout základ pro následný psychologický vývoj paní Verlocové. Pozice paní Verlocové je rozvíjena narací skrze rozšiřování jejího rozsahu vědění a hloubky vědění. Sabotáž tudíž může být charakterizována spíše jako psychologické drama než jako thriller. Vývoj narace je ovlivněn výhradně skrze měnící se rozsah vědění paní Verlocové. Divák má od začátku filmu přístup ke všem důležitým informacem, což ho činí vševědoucím. Paní Verlocová postupně získá všechny důležité informace, což jí umožní vyřešit základní konflikt filmu: na čí stranu se nakonec přikloní? Verlocovu nebo Tedovu? Film je rozdělen na čtyři bloky, což umožňuje porozumět vývoji rozsahu vědění napříč čtyřmi bloky. Rovněž umožňuje porozumět postupné psychologické proměně paní Verlocová, která jako jediná z postav projde významnou proměnou (na rozdíl od Teda, Verloca a Stevieho). Pozice diváka se rovněž mění, protože struktura narace vede divákovu pozornost skrze pozici paní Verlocové. Divák má tak umožněno porozumět jejím emocím a myšlenkám, vytvořit si sympatie k paní Verlocové, v důsledku čehož se později obává o její bezpečí. Jde o hlavní strukturní princip Sabotáže a skutečnost, která činí tento film rozdílným od ostatních filmů z takzvané Hitchcockovy thrillerové série.

Sabotage: film analysis of hitchcockian thriller which is not hitchcockian thriller This analysis is focused on Alfred Hitchcock's film Sabotage. It uses as its metodological basis the David Bordwell's book Narration in the Fiction Film. The film is considered to be a part of Hitchcock's british thriller series and it has been mistakenly described as a thriller although it is structured differently from the remaining five movies. It makes use of suspense, an important part of Hitchcock's genre movies, but the scenes working with suspense appear only twice in Sabotage and they are motivated strictly to provide background for further psychological development of Mrs. Verloc. Mrs. Verloc's position is developed by the narrative through widening of her range of knowledge and depth of knowledge. Sabotage can therefore be characterised rather as a psychological drama than thriller. The development of narrative is influenced mainly by Mrs. Verloc's changing range of knowledge. The viewer has access to all relevant information from the beginning of the movie which makes him omniscient unlike the characters. Mrs. Verloc eventually realizes all the important information which allows her to solve the primary conflict of the movie: which side is she going to take? Verloc's or Ted's? The film is structured to four parts which allows to understand the development of the range of knowledge throughout these parts. It also helps to understand the eventual psychological change of Mrs. Verloc who is the only character who comes through a significant change (unlike Ted, Verloc and Stevie). The position of the viewer also changes because the narrative structure guides the viewer's attention throughout Mrs. Verloc's position. It allows the viewer to understand her emotions and thoughts, to build sympathy towards Mrs. Verloc which later makes him fear for her safety. It is the main structuring principle of Sabotage and the fact which makes this film different from any other film in Hitchcock's so called thriller series.
