Using unconventional methods to represent the topography of Czechia

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na využití netradičních metod kartografických vizualizací pro topografická data v kontextu České republiky. V teoretické části práce jsou v rámci odborné rešerše představeny různé přístupy k netradičním vizualizacím a způsoby, jakými mohou být některé z nich použity pro topografická data. Dále jsou v této části rozebrány různé aspekty topografie a topografických map, aby bylo možné lépe porozumět potenciálním aplikacím netradičních metod. Poslední kapitola rešerše se zabývá průzkumem v oblasti netradičních přístupů k mapám a jsou zde stručně popsány některá taková díla. V praktické části práce jsou popsány jednotlivé kroky tvorby a její výsledky, které jsou prezentovány pomocí šesti vizualizačních posterů, které demonstrují použití různých netradičních metod kartografických vizualizací na zvoleném území. Dále jsou k dispozici grafické karty s návodem a automatizační nástroje, které umožňují vytvářet tyto vizualizace. Tyto nástroje by mohly být užitečné pro kartografy, kteří chtějí použít tyto netradiční metody vizualizace pro své vlastní projekty. Výsledky této práce mají potenciál zaujmout širší zájmovou skupinu, tj. nejen kartografy ale i laickou veřejnost, jelikož výstupy lze považovat za zajímavé grafické postery. Avšak vzhledem k tomu, že vizualizace jsou založeny na reálných topografických datech, mohou být rovněž užitečné pro odborníky v oboru.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the use of non-traditional cartographic visualization methods for topographic data in the context of the Czech Republic. In the theoretical part of the thesis, various approaches to non-traditional visualizations and how some of them can be used for topographic data are presented within the framework of expert research. Furthermore, different aspects of topography and topographic maps are discussed in this part to better understand the potential applications of non-traditional methods. The last section of the research deals with research in the field of non-traditional approaches to maps and some such works are briefly described. In the practical part of the thesis, the different steps of production are described, and the results are presented through six visualization posters that demonstrate the application of different non-traditional cartographic visualization methods on the selected territory. In addition, graphic cards with instructions and automation tools are provided to create these visualizations. These tools could be useful for cartographers who want to use these non-traditional visualization methods for their projects. The results of this work have also the potential to be of interest to a wider interest group, not only cartographers but also the general public, as the outputs can be considered as interesting graphical posters. However, since the visualizations are based on real topographic data, they can also be useful for professionals in the field.
