Pragmatics of Let's Play: Viewers and Their Engagement in Videos

Anotace:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje současnému fenoménu Let's Play jako novému typu komunikace zprostředkované počítačem. Cílem této práce je analyzovat jestli tato videa obsahují určité unikátní techniky, které umožňují Let's Playerům zapojit a upoutat své diváky ve videích a tímto způsobem také vytvořit s nimi vztah na pseudo úrovni. Tato práce je rozdělena na dvě části. Teoretická část definuje nová média v komunikaci zprostředkované počítačem a pragmatický přístup zvolený k analýze Let's Play videí. Také přestavuje základní informace o Let's Play, komentáři a extra-lingvistické realitě, která je ovlivňuje. Sama analýza je postavena na participační struktuře a teorie posunu postavení Ervinga Goffmana a na analýze pseudo-vtahů v médiích Anne O'Keeffe. Sekce zabývající se daty představuje rámec patnácti videí od tří různých Let's Playerů, hrající stejné čtyři videohry. Výsledky analýzy jsou rozděleny do dvou částí - neverbální a jazykově založené zapojovací rysy; které dohromady obsahují deset zapojovacích technik, jejichž dopad na vznik pseudo-vztahů mezi Let's Playery a diváky je popsán.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the contemporary phenomenon Let's Play as a new type of computer-mediated communication. The thesis aims to analyse whether the videos contain certain unique techniques that allow the Let's Players to engage their audience in the videos and this way create a pseudo-relationship with them. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part defines the new media in CMC and pragmatic approach chosen for the analysis of Let's Play videos. It also shows basic information about Let's Play, the commentary and the extra-linguistic reality affecting it. The analysis itself builds on Erving Goffman's participation framework and the theory of footing shift, and on Anne O'Keeffe's analysis of pseudo-intimacy in the media. The data section introduces the scope of fifteen videos by three different Let's Players, playing the same four games. The results of the analysis are divided into two categories - non-verbal and language-based engagement features; which altogether contain ten involvement techniques, which impact on the creation of a pseudo-relationship between the Let's Player and the viewers is described.
