The Emoticon and judgement about emotion of message writer: The role of reader's emotional intelligence

Abstract:

Tato studie hledá odpověď na otázku, zda je míra, ve které emotikon připojený ke zprávě v internetové diskusi ovlivňuje úsudek čtenáře o valenci emoce pisatele, ovlivňována čtenářovou emoční inteligencí. Byl realizován kvaziexperiment na výzkumném vzorku 91 osob. Sběr dat proběhl na internetu. Pro testování vlivu emotikonu na úsudek o valenci emocí pisatele byl vytvořen původní Test vlivu emotikonů, pro určení míry emoční inteligence byla využita krátká verze testu Situational Test of Emotional Understanding (STEU). Hypotézy byly testovány za užití analýzy rozptylu (faktoriální ANOVA) na pětiprocentní hladině významnosti. Výsledky indikují, že emoční inteligence nehraje v úsudku o emoci pisatele v interakci s emotikonem žádnou roli – interakce vlivu emotikonu a emoční inteligence nebyla ani v jednom ze šesti případů statisticky významná. Tento závěr je zapotřebí interpretovat s opatrností s ohledem na možný vliv použitých výzkumných nástrojů (STEU, Test vlivu emotikonů); zde je také prostor pro další výzkum - prověření platnosti tohoto vztahu při jiné operacionalizaci emoční inteligence a jinak konstruovaném testu vlivu emotikonu. Jako další potenciálně plodný směr zkoumání vztahu emoční inteligence a vlivu emotikonů vnímám hledání souvislostí na subtilnější rovině úsudku o emocích pisatele – ne pouze v úsudku o valenci emoce, nýbrž v rovině identifikace konkrétních emocí.

Abstract:

This study seeks to answer the question whether reader's emotional intelligence influences the degree to which an emoticon attached to the message in an Internet discussion affects the reader´s judgment of the writer´s emotion . Quasi-experiment was carried out on a research sample of 91 participants. Data collection took place on the Internet. To determine the effect of the emoticon on the emotional valence judgments original Test of emoticons impact was created, degree of emotional intelligence was measured by the short version of the Situational Test of Emotional Understanding (STEU). Hypotheses were tested using the analysis of variance (two-way independent ANOVA) at five percent significance level. The results indicate that emotional intelligence doesn´t interact with emoticons in influencing the judgment about writer's emotion – in none of the six ANOVAs this interaction was statistically significant. This finding should be interpreted with caution with regard to the likely impact of research tools used (STEU, Test of emoticons impact); there is also possible field for further research – to check the validity of this relationship with a different operationalization of emotional intelligence and otherwise constructed test of emoticons impact. As another potentially fruitful direction of examining the relationship of emotional intelligence and impact of emoticons I consider examining the more subtle level of the judgement of writer's emotions - not only the judgment of the valence of emotion, but also identification of specific emotions.kon, emoční inteligence, STEU
