Strategic Importance of Georgia for NATO's Security Framework in the Caucasus

Abstract:

This policy paper addresses Georgia’s role in NATO’s security framework, focusing on its strategic importance in the South Caucasus and the challenges preventing deeper integration. With its strategic location, important energy transit lines, and substantial contributions to NATO operations, Georgia is an essential partner for the organization. However, unsettled border conflicts, Russian opposition, and the disagreement among NATO members have blocked the path to full membership. This policy paper evaluates three policy options: maintaining the current partnership, enhancing military and economic cooperation, and accelerating Georgia’s NATO membership. After analyzing the strengths and risks of each, the paper recommends strengthening NATO-Georgia cooperation through increased defense support, economic aid, and diplomatic engagement.This approach balances regional stability with NATO’s strategic interests while addressing Georgia’s security needs.
