Corruption at the international level - A Case Study of Siemens

Abstract:

Jako jeden z největších problémů moderní doby stále přetrvává korupce, a to navzdory boji proti ní na mezinárodní i národní úrovni. Skandál společnosti Siemens se řadí k jedné z největších korupčních kauz moderní historie, která měla zásadní dopad na mezinárodní společenství. Práce si klade za cíl identifikovat příčiny korupčního jednání společnosti a následně analyzovat, postoj který Siemens k tomuto skandálu zaujal a jaká opatření za účelem snížení výskytu korupce byla zavedena. Dalším úkolem je zjistit, jaká byla reakce mezinárodního společenství na tento skandál a jaké nástroje byly implementvány za účelem potírání korupce. Tato práce je zpracována využitím metod hloubkové analýzy odborné literatury, deskripce a investigativy. Na základě výsledků, které vyplývají z analýzy tohoto skandálu, společnost Siemens přijala proaktivní postoj a implementovala rozsáhlé reformy, včetně zavedení programu Compliance a centralizace kontrolních mechanismů. Spolu s tím i ze strany mezinárodního společenství, byly zaznamenány snahy o vytvoření pevnějších mezinárodních standardů v boji proti korupci a zvýšení transparentnosti.

Abstract:

Corruption remains one of the biggest problems of modern times, despite various efforts to combat it at both the international and national levels. The Siemens scandal ranks as one of the biggest corruption cases in modern history and has had a major impact on the international community. This thesis aims to identify the causes of the company‘s corrupt behaviour and then analyses the stance that Siemens has taken towards the scandal as well as the measures implemented to reduce the incidence of corruption. Another task is to examine the international community‘s reaction to the scandal and what instruments have been implemented to combat corruption. This thesis is developed using methods of in-depth literature analysis, descriptive and investigative research. Based on the results of the analysis of this scandal, Siemens has taken a proactive approach and implemented extensive reforms, including the introduction of a Compliance program and the centralization of control mechanisms. Along with these efforts the international community have implemented stronger international standards in the fight against corruption and have increased transparency.
