How transgender individuals feel in secondary schools in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce pojednává o prožívání transgender žáků a žaček na středních školách. Práce se skládá z teoretické a empirické části, přičemž teoretická část se věnuje především poruše pohlavní identity a pojmům s tím spojených: genetické pohlaví, pohlavní identita, genderová role a další. Je zde také popsán průběh léčby transgender osob, tedy tranzice. V další kapitole je popsáno, jak české střední školy přistupují k transgender osobám a v čem mohou mít na tyto žáky negativní vliv. V empirické části jsou interpretovaná výsledná zjištění kvalitativního výzkumného šetření, které bylo provedeno na základě sedmi hloubkových polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s transgender osobami na střední škole. V rámci výzkumu došlo především k zjištění, že trans osoby jsou na svých školách spokojeny, nicméně musí čelit mnoha pro ně nepříjemným situacím, které by mohly být řešeny v případě, kdyby okolí bylo o problematice více informováno.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis deals with the experiences of transgender students in high schools. The thesis consists of theoretical and empirical parts, with the theoretical part focusing mainly on gender identity disorder and related concepts such as genetic sex, gender identity, gender role, and others. The process of treatment for transgender individuals, or transition, is also described. In the next chapter, the approach of Czech high schools towards transgender individuals is described, along with the negative impact they can have on these students. The empirical part mainly interprets the findings of a qualitative research study, which was based on seven in-depth semi-structured interviews with transgender high school students. The research found that transgender individuals are generally satisfied at their schools, but they still face many unpleasant situations that could be addressed if those around them were more informed about the issue.
