Sex Differences in Digital Dermatoglyphic Patterns: A Review

Abstract:

Ve frekvencích tří hlavních vzorů (oblouček A, smyčka L, vír W) byly v dermatoglyfice zaznamenány systematické rozdíly mezi populačními skupinami. Africké populace vykazují větší frekvenci obloučků, zatímco asijské a americké populace vyšší frekvenci vírů. Dermatoglyfické přehledy také uvádí zákonitosti pro intersexuální rozdíly ve frekvenci základních typů vzorů. U mužů se zjišťuje vyšší frekvence smyček a vírů, u žen naopak vyšší frekvence obloučků. Odlišně vyznívající výsledky jsou považovány za výjimku. Tato práce představuje systematický přehled údajů z odborné dermatoglyfické literatury o frekvencích dermatoglyfických vzorů na bříškách prstů ruky a jejich rozdílech u mužů a u žen. Práce je založena 326 dermatoglyfických studiích, zahrnujících celkem 133 lidských skupin a údajích o 615 423 jedinců. V těchto zdrojích byly vyhledány hodnoty frekvencí dermatoglyfických vzorů u mužů a u žen a ty byly srovnávány mezi hlavními populačními skupinami a mezi pohlavími. Výsledky potvrdily známé rozdíly ve frekvencích dermatoglyfických vzorů mezi velkými populačními skupinami. Sexuální dimorfismus ve frekvencích vzorů sice častěji odpovídá výše uvedenému trendu, v nezanedbatelné části studií byl však zjištěn dimorfismus opačný: ve 20,9 % studií byla vyšší frekvence vírů u žen a u 18,91 % studií vyšší frekvence obloučků u mužů. Tyto odchylky proto nelze považovat za výjimku a jejich příčinami je třeba se dál zabývat. Práce je přípravou pro rozsáhlejší metaanalytickou studii.

Abstract:

In dermatoglyphics, systematic differences in the frequency of the three main pattern types (arch A, loop L, whorl W) were found between population groups. African populations show a higher frequency of loops, while Asian and American populations show a higher frequency of whorls. Dermatoglyphic data also indicate the existence of patterns for intersexual differences in the frequency of the three main pattern types. A higher frequency of loops and whorls is observed in men, while there is a higher frequency of arches in women. Contrary results are considered an exception. This paper presents a systematic overview of dermatoglyphic literature on the frequencies of dermatoglyphic patterns on the balls of fingers and their differences in men and women. The work is based on 326 dermatoglyphic studies comprising 133 population groups and 615 423 individuals. From these data the pattern frequency values in men and women were selected, and comparisons between the main population groups and between both sexes were made. The obtained results confirmed the known differences in dermatoglyphic pattern frequencies between the main population groups. Although sexual dimorphism in pattern frequencies mostly corresponds to the above mentioned tendency, the opposite dimorphism was observed in an indispensable part of the studies: in 20.9 % of the studies the frequency of whorls was higher in women, and 18.9% showed a higher frequency of arches in men. These variations cannot, therefore, be considered an exception, and their causes should be the subject of further study. This work represents a preliminary phase of a metastudy.
