Automata for Formal Methods: Little Steps Towards Perfection

Abstract:

Jako vhodná reprezentace jazyků nekonečných slov jsou ω-automaty hojně využívány ve formálních metodách. Obzvlášťe algoritmy, které analyzují systémy vykazující nekonečné chování, často spoléhají na ω-automaty. Díky efektivním algoritmům pro průnik, sjednocení a test prázdnosti reprezentovaných jazyků pro různé třídy ω-automatů jsou tyto automaty vhodné pro metody ověřování modelu se specifikací zadanou pomocí automatu či formule (nejen) logiky LTL. Determinizace a komplementace ω-automatů jsou problémy známé svou komplikovaností. Proto je nasazení metod, které pro své správné fungování vyžadují deterministické automaty (například syntéza reaktivních systémů či ověřování modelu pro systémy s pravděpodobností) nebo komplementují ω-automaty (například analýza terminace v nástroji Ultimate Büchi Automizer), často považované za problematické. Předkládaná dizertace přistupuje k ω-automatům a jejich využití ve formálních metodách z různých směrů a prezentuje hned několik výsledků, které přispěli k lepším automatům pro formální metody. Popis těchto výsledků je rozdělen do tří částí. První část je spojena s nástrojem Spin a nedeterministickými Büchiho automaty. Zabýváme se v ní tím, jak mohou různé automaty pro jeden jazyk ovlivnit výkon Spinu. Přinášíme několik zajímavých pozorování a praktických doporučení pro překladače LTL. Dále představíme metodu, která pomáhá budovat automaty šité na míru konkrétním verifikačním úlohám. Automaty jsou konstruovány se znalostí daného systému a díky této znalosti jsou často znatelně menší, čož vede ve výsledku k rychlejšímu fungování nástroje Spin. Druhá část je věnována překladům LTL do deterministických automatů. Představíme v ní překlad fragmentu LTL do generalizovaných Rabinových automatů. Také diskutujeme další přístupy a nástroje pro překlady LTL do deterministických automatů a nabízíme jejich detailní experimentální porovnání. Poslední část se věnuje semi-deterministickým automatům, což jsou automaty, kde se každý akceptující běh chová od jisté doby deterministicky. V této části popisujeme algoritmy pro převod nedeterministických Büchiho automatů na semi-deterministické, a dále algoritmus pro komplementaci takovýchto automatů.

Abstract:

As ω-automata are a convenient representation of languages of infinite words, they are widespread in the area of formal methods; many algorithms that analyze systems with infinite behaviours rely on ω-automata. The efficient algorithms for the intersection, union, and emptiness checking for various classes of ω-automata made them appealing for model checking of properties expressed as ω-regular languages or as formulae in (not only) Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). On the contrary, determinization and complementation of ω-automata are notoriously difficult problems. This fact complicates usage of the automata-based methods that need deterministic automata (like model checking of probabilistic systems or synthesis of reactive systems) or inherently employ language difference or complementation of ω-automata (like termination analysis in the tool Ultimate Automizer). This dissertation approaches ω-automata and formal methods from various directions and presents several contributions towards perfect automata for formal methods. The presentation of the contributions is divided into three parts. The first part is tightly connected to the model checker Spin and nondeterministic Büchi automata. We investigate how different automata for one language can influence the performance of Spin and we bring several interesting observations and recommendations for LTL translators. Moreover, we introduce a method that enables the creation of automata that are suited for a particular verification task. The automata convey knowledge about the system to be verified; this knowledge sometimes helps to make the automata significantly smaller and to speed up the model checking. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the translation of LTL into deterministic automata. We present an efficient translation of a fragment of LTL into automata with generalized Rabin acceptance condition. We also discuss other approaches to the translation and offer an extensive experimental comparison of available tools. The last part discusses semi-deterministic automata, which are automata that are deterministic in the limit. We develop an algorithm (and a tool) for semi-determinization of Büchi automata, and an efficient algorithm for complementation of these automata.
