Body and embodiment in the work of Frida Kahlo analyzed through gender theory by Iris Marion Young

Abstract:

Práce analyzuje tělo a tělesnot v díle mexické malířky Fridy Kahlo z pohledu teorie Iris Marion Young, již představila v textu „Throwing Like a Girl“. Young ve své práci propouje dva teoretické koncepty – antiesencialistickou teorii genderu a fenomenologickou analýzu. První teoretická část práce se zbývá ukotvením teoretických východisek Iris Marion Young a jejich rozšířením o estetické principy, které jsou využity v druhé analytické části. Iris Marion Young mluví o protikladné ženské tělesné existenci, kdy je žena žitým subjektem a zároveň kdy je tělesným objektem, se kterým lze zacházet jako s věcí. Na základě fenomenologické filozofie Maurice Merleau-Pontyho je tělo nezbytné k naší žité zkušenosti s okolním světem a k utváření vlastního já. Při porušení vztahu s vlastní tělesností není jedinec zcela schopen svět okolo sebe uchopit a zároveň procesem sebereflexe vytvořit silnou individualitu. Díky rozpolcenosti subjektivity a objektivity v ženském tělesném prožívání je žitá zkušenost ve smyslu Merleau-Pontyho narušena. Tento princip je v práci doložen na obrazech Fridy Kahlo, kdy jsou jednotlivé aspekty subjektivnosti, objektivnosti, imanence a transcendence spojovány (podle Young) s konkrétními estetickými koncepty. Práce nachází Youngovské koncepty v díle Fridy Kahlo, která jako žena takto prožívala svou tělesnou danost a svoje prožívání vyjádřila ve svých malbách.

Abstract:

This paper analyses body and corporeality in works of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo from the view of Iris Marion Young which she has introduced in the text „Throwing Like a Girl“. Young connects two theoretical concepts in this work – antiesencialist theory of gender and phenomenological analysis. The first theoretical part of the paper is occupied by anchoring Young´s theoretical starting points, and its broadening with the aesthetic principles which are used in the second analytical part. Iris Marion Young speaks about contradiction of feminine corporeal existence when is woman a lived subject, and a corporeal object, which you can manipulate like as it is a thing, at the same time. At the basis of phenomenological philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty body is necessary for our lived experience with outer world, and for building our own “I”. When the relationship with one´s corporeality is disconnected then a person is not able to grasp the outer world properly, and the self-reflecting process of making own individuality is disconnected too. Thanks to a schism of subjectivity and objectivity in women´s corporeal experience, the lived experience in sense of Merelau-Ponty is disturbed. This princip is attested in the paper at the works of Frida Kahlo where the individual aspects of subjectivity, objectivity, immanence, and transcendence (according to Young) are connected with concrete aesthetic concepts. The paper finds Young´s concepts in works of Frida Kahlo, who had experience her given corporeality as a woman, and which she had expressed in her paintings.
