User-Centered Conceptual Models for Understanding Web Archive Collections

Abstract:

Popis metadat webových archivů komplikuje rozsah archivovaného obsahu, jeho dynamická povaha i rozdílné přístupy k tvorbě metadat, které jsou na úkor interoperability. Přestože se vyskytují snahy o řešení tohoto problému, neexistuje žádný jednotný konceptuální model zachycující sémantiku kolekcí webových archivů, a právě na to reaguje tato práce. Nejprve je provedena doménová analýza univerza diskurzu archivace webu, která zahrnuje přehled stávajícího softwaru, datových formátů a metadatových standardů a také rešerše literatury o potřebách uživatelů. Poté jsou popsány konceptuální modely předložené profesními sdruže-ními v oblasti kulturního dědictví, konkrétně IFLA LRM vytvořený knihovnickou komunitou, CIDOC CRM pocházející z muzejní komunity, RiC-CM pocházející z archivní komunity a několik zavedených modelů z jiných oblastí. U každé je zkoumán jejich potenciál pro vyjádření klíčo-vých pojmů domény archivace webu. Nakonec je představen CRMweb, rozšíření CIDOC CRM a kompatibilních modelů, a model je demonstrován na malé tematické kolekci Webarchivu. Je diskutováno, jak by model mohl přispět k uspokojení potřeb uživatelů.

Abstract:

Metadata description for web archives is complicated by the scope of the archived content, its dynamic nature, and diverging approaches to metadata description, which complicate interoperability. While efforts have been made to address this, there is no shared conceptual model for understanding web archive collections, which is where this thesis comes in. First, a domain analysis of the web archiving universe of discourse is conducted, which includes an overview of existing software, data formats, and metadata standards, as well as a literature review of user needs. Then conceptual models put forth by professional associations within the cultural heritage domain, namely IFLA LRM created by the library community, CIDO CRM originating from the museum community, RiC-CM stemming from the archive community, and a few established models from other domains, are described and their potential for expressing key concepts of the web archiving domain is explored. Finally, CRMweb, an extension of CIDOC CRM and compatible models, is presented and the model is demonstrated on a small thematic collection harvested by Webarchiv. It is discussed how the model could contribute to meeting user needs.
