Táto práca sa zaoberá osobnosťou cisárovnej vdovy Cixi a spôsobu, akým je zobrazovaná v prameňoch, napísaných počas jej života a krátko po jej smrti cudzincami, predovšetkým tými, ktorí v tej dobe žili v Číne.
