Identity formation whilst on a student exchange program.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem vysokoškolských studentů, kteří se během svého studia účastní studijního pobytu Erasmus v rámci Evropy. Cílem práce je zodpovědět základní otázku, která zní: Jak prožívá student vysoké školy dlouhodobý studijní pobyt v zahraničí? Důležitými okruhy jsou fáze, kterými student během pobytu prochází, dále jakým způsobem se mění jeho identita, jak se student začleňuje do života v nové zemi a v neposlední řadě také jak prožívá návrat do rodné země, který studenta na konci pobytu čeká. Text shrnuje proces proměny a vývoj studentovy identity a dotýká se také tématu transnacionální migrace a evropské identity. K zodpovězení příslušných otázek jsou využívány informace z již publikované literatury příslušné k danému tématu, realizovaných mezinárodních i vnitrostátních výzkumů a dokumentů, které představují život studentů participujících se na programu Erasmus. Erasmus program je významně rozsáhlý mezinárodní projekt vytvořený a podporovaný Evropskou unií, kterého se účastní tisíce studentů ročně. Tato práce dává čtenářům možnost seznámit se jak s tímto programem a jeho cíli, tak s osobními pocity a názory samotných studentů účastnících se projektu.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis is focusing on the topic of university students who are participating on the academical exchange programme Erasmus within Europe during their university study. The aim of this thesis is to answer the following research question: How university student experiences a long-term stay abroad? Significant themes in the text are phases which students are going through during their stay, how the student´s identity is changing, how the student is adapting to a new lifestyele in a different country and last but not least, how the student is experiencing the return to his/her home country at the end of the programme. The text summarizes the process of changes and development of a student´s identity. It is also touching the topics of transnational migration and European identity. For answering respective questions significant for the Bachelor thesis, various sources have been used such as information from already published literature, implemented international and domestic research and documents concentrating on exchange students participating in the Erasmus programme. The Erasmus programme is a large international project established and supported by the European Union. There are thousands of students taking part in the programme every year. This thesis gives the readers an opportunity to get to know the programme and its aims as well as personal feelings and opinions of students who are participating in the programme.
