Angels and Rebels in The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda by George Eliot

Anotace:

Tato práce se soustředí na problematiku ženských postav ve třech románech George Eliot—The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch a Daniel Deronda—a na způsob, jakým jsou obecně vnímány, tedy buď jako postavy reprezentující viktoriánský ideál ženy—domácího anděla, nebo naopak jako hrdinky rebelující proti tomuto ideálu a potažmo i proti společnosti ovládané muži. Hlavní myšlenkou této práce je, že takto jednoznačně, tedy na anděly a rebely, postavy George Eliot dělit nelze. Text tedy pracuje s novým rozdělením, a to na rebelující anděly a andělské rebely, jelikož tato pojmenování lépe vystihují nejednoznačnost zkoumaných postav. Ve výsledku pak tato práce dokazuje, že George Eliot netvoří černobílé postavy, že nedémonizuje, ale ani nevelebí obraz domácího anděla a že tudíž nelze s určitostí říci, že je její postoj vůči tomuto ideálu jasně pozitivní nebo negativní. Nepřítomnost jednoznačných postav v jejích románech naopak naznačuje, že zobrazení viktoriánské ženy, které čtenáři zprostředkovává George Eliot, může být relativně věrné realitě.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the question of female characters in three novels by George Eliot—The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda—and their being regarded as representatives of the ideal of the angel in the house or, on the contrary, as characters rebelling against the concept of the domestic angel and, subsequently, against the male-dominated society. The thesis argues that the selected characters are neither clear-cut angels nor rebels and it introduces their being classified as rebelling angels and angelic rebels in order to highlight their duality. The thesis proves that George Eliot does not create black-and-white characters, she does neither demonize nor praise the concept of the angel in the house and, therefore, it is not possible to say that her attitude towards the image of the Victorian angel is strictly positive or negative. On the contrary, the lack of clear-cut characters suggests that her depiction of Victorian women might be rather trustworthy.
