Humbert and Jay: A Little Bit of Empathy, Reader!

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vypravěčskými postupy Humberta a Jaye, kteří jsou vypravěči a zároveň hlavními hrdiny románů Lolita (1959), od Vladimira Nabobova, a Intimacy (1998), od Hanifa Kureishiho. Práce popisuje schopnost vypravěčů vzbudit ve čtenářích pocity porozumění, ačkoliv podpory se ani Humbert, ani Jay z jejich strany nedočkají. Vypravěči přimějí čtenáře, aby pochopili jejich pocity a chování, ačkoliv je to právě chování Humberta a Jaye, které čtenáře tak často popuzuje. Práce srovnává dva vypravěčské postupy, které se podstatně liší, avšak navzdory tomu dokáží vyvolat u čtenářů stejné pocity a reakce.

Abstract:

This work deals with the narrative techniques of Humbert and Jay who are the narrators as well as the main characters of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita (1959) and Hanif Kureishi’s novel Intimacy (1998), respectively. It describes the two narrators’ ability to elicit empathy from the readers who feel but little sympathy for them. The readers are made to understand the narrators’ emotions and behaviour although it is exactly the behaviour of the narrators that often repels the readers and discourages them from supporting the two narrators. The work is a comparison of the two narrative techniques which differ substantially yet which, nevertheless, achieve to evoke the same emotions from their readers.
