Resource endowment impact on indiscriminate rebel violence towards civilians

Abstract:

Tato práce testuje hypotézu představenou J. Weinsteinem v knize „Inside Rebellion: The Politics of Insurgent Violence“. Hypotéza uvádí, že rebelské skupiny z prostředí bohatého na zdroje páchají velké množství nerozlišujícího násilí; naopak rebelové z prostředí chudého na zdroje uplatňují násilí selektivně a strategicky. Text využívá Weinsteinovu metodu shromažďování dat a měření významu přístupu ke zdrojům na rebelské nerozlišující násilí, a to pomocí regresní analýzy metodou nejmenších čtverců. Tato práce dochází k závěru, že teorie přístupu ke zdrojům je částečně správná. Výstupy regresní analýzy a následná kontrolní kvalitativní část replikovaná dle pokynů autora nicméně dochází k závěru, že ve vztahu rebelů a civilistů jsou ve hře další faktory. Teorie přístupu ke zdrojům nebere tyto faktory v potaz, a precizované výsledky replikace teorie spolu s konkrétními doporučeními pro směřování navazujícího výzkumu jsou tak hlavními výstupy této práce.

Abstract:

This thesis tests hypothesis introduced by J. Weinstein in his book ‘Inside Rebellion: The Politics of Insurgent Violence’. The hypothesis states that rebel groups from the resource-rich environment commit high levels of indiscriminate violence; and reversely, rebels from resource-poor environment employ violence selectively and strategically. The text employs Weinstein’s procedure of gathering data and measuring the significance of resource endowment on rebel indiscriminate violence, using ordinary least square regression analysis. This thesis concludes that the resource-based theory is partially correct. However, the results of the regression analysis and the subsequent qualitative control segment, replicated following author’s guidelines, indicate that additional factors are at play in the relationship between rebels and civilians. The resource-based theory does not account for these factors, and the refined results of the replication, along with specific recommendations for future research directions, constitute the main contributions of this thesis.
