Cultural behavior in animals: distortion of the boundary between human and nonhuman

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá kulturním chováním u zvířat a tím, jak jeho přítomnost v přírodním světě rozrušuje hranici mezi lidským a mimolidským (kulturním a přírodním). Nejprve je tato hranice představena jako sociálně konstruovaná a je dokázáno, že její přítomnost a umístění je historicky a kulturně podmíněné. Dále je reflektován vliv kulturního zázemí na zkoumání kulturního chování u zvířat, jsou ukázány rozdíly mezi západní a japonskou primatologií a představeny argumenty pro rehabilitaci antropomorfismu. Poté jsou prezentovány příklady kulturního chování u primátů, ptáků, kytovců a dalších druhů a je reflektováno, jakým způsobem přítomnost tohoto chování rozrušuje hranici lidského a mimolidského. V závěru práce jsou diskutovány důsledky a výzvy, které s rozrušením hranice lidského a mimolidského vyvstávají v oblastech vztahování se ke zvířatům, environmentální ideologie a oddělení přírodních a společenských věd.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with cultural behavior in animals and with distortion of the boundary between human and nonhuman (cultural and natural) caused by emergence of this behavior in natural world. Firstly, this boundary is presented as socially constructed and it is demonstrated that its presence and positioning is historically and culturally determined. Then, the influence of cultural background on the study of the cultural behavior is discussed, differences between western and Japanese primatologies are demonstrated and arguments for rehabilitation of anthropomorphism are presented. Further examples of cultural behavior in primates, birds and cetaceans and other species are shown, and the way in which the emergence of this boundary is causing distortion of the boundary between human and nonhuman is reflected. In the end of the thesis, the consequences and challenges that arise with this distortion in the topics of relating to animals, environmental ideology and separation of natural and social sciences are discussed.
