Janelle Monáe: Queering Afrofuturism in Music

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the revolutionary and innovative reflection of Afrofuturism in the musical work of African-American singer Janelle Monáe. The work aims to map the evolution of Afrofuturism as a cultural-aesthetic direction and in its context to analyze the influence of the singer's sexuality - queer identity, androgynous elements - and her ethnicities on her music, lyrics and visual style. In this perspective, the thesis the concept of difference (otherness), typical of Afrofuturism and other Afrocentric cultural-aesthetic directions.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá převratnou a inovativní reflexí Afrofuturismu v hudební tvorbě afroamerické zpěvačky Janelle Monáe. Práce si dává za cíl zmapovat vývoj afrofuturismu coby kulturně-estetického směru a v jeho kontextu analyzovat vliv zpěvaččiny sexuality - queer identity, androgynních prvků - a její etnicity na její hudbu, texty a vizuální styl. V tomto ohledu práce využívá zejména konceptu odlišnosti (otherness), typického pro afrofuturismus a další afrocentrické kulturně-estetické směry.
