Role of small states in European Union: case study of Denmark

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce analyzuje předsednictví Dánska, jako nástroje malých států v působení na evropské i zahraniční záležitosti v rámci Evropské unie. První část práce se zaměřuje na různé definice malých států, na jejich postavení v mezinárodních vztazích a na jejich možné politiky, které mohou využít ve svůj prospěch. V druhé části dochází k definování malého státu na evropském kontinentu a k historickému přehledu vývoje Rady Evropské unie a její důležité funkce předsednictví. Působení malého státu v Evropské unii je znázorněno v případové studii Dánska. Nejprve je třetí část práce zaměřena na historické okolnosti působení Dánska v evropském společenství, především jeho specifické vlastnosti a požadavky. V další části dochází k analýze dánského předsednictví v Evropské unii, konkrétně v letech 2002 a 2012. Na závěr dojde ke zobecnění dánského předsednictví a působení v EU na všechny malé členské státy.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis analyzes the Danish Presidency as a tool for small states to act at European and international affairs within the European Union. The first part focuses on different definitions of small states, on their position in international relations and on their policy options that they can use in their favor. A small country on the European continent and the historical overview of the development of the Council of the European Union and its important function of the presidency are defined in the second part. The action of a small state in the European Union is illustrated by a case study of Denmark. The beginning of the third part focuses on the historical circumstances of Danish influence in the European community, especially on its specific characteristics and requirements. In the following part is analyzed the Danish Presidency of the European Union, particularly in years 2002 and 2012. Finally, the Danish Presidency and the influence in the EU is generalized on all small Member States.
