Transcending Interpretation of Playing Experience in the Selected Parts of Final Fantasy X

Abstract:

V magisterské práci se zaměřuji na výzkum interpretačního přesahu herní zkušenosti ve vybraných částech digitální hry Final Fantasy X (dále také FFX). V práci se zabývám otázkou, jakým způsobem hráči Final Fantasy X vykládají svou herní zkušenost s vybranými částmi hry a jak tuto zkušenost využívají v procesu utváření osobních významů a rozumění světa. Sekundárně se diplomovou prací snažím nastínit potenciální motivaci k výzkumu herní zkušenosti v souvislosti se zkušeností náboženskou. K získání dat jsem zvolil kvalitativní výzkum ve formě polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, kterých se zúčastnilo mezinárodní publikum deseti hráčů FFX. Získaná data jsem vyhodnotil na základě principů tematické analýzy. Práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních strukturovaných celků – část teoretickou a část praktickou. Pro uchopení a porozumění zvoleného výzkumného záměru se v teoretické části nejprve zaměřuji na ukotvení základních pojmů spjatých s popisem digitálních her a blíže představuji herní titul Final Fantasy X. Dále se zaměřuji na přístupy a postoje religionistiky vůči digitálním hrám, pokouším se definovat a uchopit zásadní pojmy spojené s herní zkušeností a v návaznosti na to představuji koncept přesahové interpretace. V praktické části se věnuji samotnému výzkumu a popisu jednotlivých kroků, které jsem zvolil pro sběr a analýzu dat. V těchto krocích jsou samozřejmě zahrnuty také obecné informace o respondentech, typu výzkumu a jeho zdůvodnění. Hlavními výsledky práce jsou zjištění, jakým způsobem respondenti chápou Final Fantasy X, jaké místo zaujímá FFX v jejich pohledu na svět a jakou roli hraje FFX v činnosti utváření významů, tj. jakým způsobem hráči prožívají Final Fantasy X. Výsledná data poukazují na to, že Final Fantasy X pro respondenty nebyla pouze zdrojem krátkodobého potěšení, ale i vyvolávala hlubší a trvalejší afektivní a kognitivní reakce.

Abstract:

The master’s thesis focuses on the research of transcending interpretations of selected parts of Final Fantasy X (hereinafter also FFX). The thesis deals with the question of how Final Fantasy X players interpret their gaming experience with selected parts of the game and how they use this experience in forming of personal meanings and understanding of the world. Secondarily, the thesis tries to outline the potential motivation for the research of the gaming experience in connection with religious experience. Qualitative research in the form of a structured interview with ten FFX players was chosen to obtain data. Obtained data were subsequently evaluated by thematic analysis. The thesis is divided into two main structured units, the theoretical part and the practical part. To grasp and understand the chosen research focus, in the theoretical part I focus on anchoring the basic concepts related to the description of digital games and present the game title Final Fantasy X in more detail. I also focus on the approaches and attitudes of religious studies towards digital games, I try to define and list essential concepts associated with game experiences and, following this, I introduce the concept of transcending interpretation. In the practical part, I deal with the research itself the description of the individual steps that I chose for data collection and analysis. Of course, these steps also include general information about the respondents, the type of the research and its rationale. The main result of this thesis are findings of how the respondents understand Final Fantasy X, what role FFX plays in their worldview, and what role FFX plays in the process of meaning making, i.e., how players experience Final Fantasy X. The resulting data show that FFX was not only a source of short-term pleasure for the respondents, but it caused deeper and more lasting affective and cognitive responses.
