"Could you repeat IT?": Error Analysis of Pair Work Oral Production of Czech Secondary School Students

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá ústní projev českých studentů anglického jazyka druhého stupně školy při jejich komunikaci během párových pracovních aktivitách s použitím výzkumné metody chybové analýzy. Vstupní data představují video a audio nahrávky jedné skupiny studentů posledního ročníku brněnského gymnázia pořízené v průběhu tří po sobě jdoucích vyučovacích hodin. Hlavním účelem tohoto studia je zmapovat druhy chyb, které dělají studenti a zaznamenat jejích četnost. Diplomová práce se také zaměřuje na objasnění původu těchto chyb s odkazem na různé psycholingvistické procesy. V závěru práce srovnávám výsledky provedené chybové analýzy s výsledky jiných analýz provedených v České republice. První kapitola stanovuje teoretická východiska pro tento výzkum. Rozvádí takzvanou Mezijazykovou teorii jako základ pro chybovou analýzu a také rozebírá klíčové pojmy spojené s výzkumem slovního projevu studentů cizího jazyku. Kapitola je zakončena přehledem předchozích výzkumu. Druhá kapitola pojednává o podmínkách prováděného výzkumu. Následně se v kapitole uvádí, v jakých krocích byla chybová analýzy prováděna počínaje sběrem dat, identifikace chyb, jejích popisu, vysvětlení, a koneční vyhodnocení těchto chyb. Třetí kapitola prezentuje výsledky výzkumu, které jsou seřazení podle jazykových domén. Výsledky ukazují, že největší počet odlišností (chyb) je v oblasti gramatiky (zvláště v podkategorii určitý a neurčitý člen a také u sloves) a v oblasti slovní zásoby (tady jsou nejčastější podkategorie samostatných předložek a frází). Závěrečná část rozebírá výsledky provedené chybové analýzy ve světle předchozích studií. Posléze se vyhodnocují výsledky s ohledem na důvody chyb a další faktory. V samém závěru jsou uvedena omezení tohoto výzkumu a chybové analýzy jako výzkumné metody a mé úvahy o možnostech budoucího výzkumu jako například studie přepínání kódů během párové práce a také konverzační analýza vzájemné komunikace mezi studenty.

Abstract:

This thesis employs the Error Analysis research method to study the spoken production of English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) Czech students in learner-learner interaction that takes place during pair work activities in the upper-secondary school classroom. The primary data are video and audio recordings from three consecutive lessons of a group of last-year students in one of Brno’s secondary schools. The main aim of the study is to map out the types of errors made by the learners and their frequencies. It also seeks to illuminate the likely sources of these errors in terms of different psycholinguistic processes. Finally, the thesis compares the results of the present error analysis with those of other similar studies conducted in the Czech Republic. The first chapter lays down the theoretical underpinnings for the present research. It looks at Interlanguage theory as the basis for the Error Analysis method, and discusses key concepts connected with the study of learner language. The chapter ends with an overview of previous studies. The second chapter gives contextual information about the study. It then describes the steps in the Error Analysis procedure, which consist of data collection, error identification, description, explanation, and evaluation. Chapter three presents the results of the study organized according to linguistic domain. The findings show the greatest number of discrepancies at the level of Grammar (especially in the sub-categories of Article Use and Verbal Phrase) and Lexis (here the most numerous sub-categories are Independent Prepositions and Phrases). The concluding part discusses the results of the error analysis in light of previous studies. It also summarizes the findings as to the sources of the identified errors and other influencing factors. The final part ends with an acknowledgement of the limitations of the study and error analysis as a research method, and suggests possibilities for future research such as a look at code-switching during pair work or an analysis of peer-to-peer interaction from conversational perspective.
