Historical and current use of the Spanish future subjunctive

Abstract:

Práce si klade za cíl srovnat teoretické poznatky o subjunktivu budoucího času s konkrétními případy použití vyhledanými v korpusech Španělské královské akademie, CREA a CORDE, ale také, jak již název práce napovídá, porovnat jeho historické používání s používáním současným. Na počátku je čtenář obeznámen se základní charakteristikou tohoto gramatického času a kontexty, v nichž ho lze nalézt. Na základě těchto poznatků jsou dále stanoveny hypotézy, které vymezují podmínky, za jakých se subjunktiv budoucího času často vyskytuje. Tyto předpoklady souvisejí s rozličnými faktory. Lingvistické faktory se zabývají druhy vět, kde se subjunktiv budoucího času používá. Následují diatopické faktory, které zkoumají země, kde se tento jev uchoval, zatímco diachronické faktory se zaměřují na časovou distribuci. Poslední faktory, faktory stylistické, zkoumají používání subjunktivu budoucího času ze dvou hledisek: ústního použití a témat, v nichž se vyskytuje nejčastěji. Ačkoli se analýza zaměřuje především na imperfektní formu subjunktivu budoucího času, závěr každé části analýzy se věnuje také formě perfektní. Výzkum byl prováděn v korpusech Španělské královské akademie CREA a CORDE pomocí skupiny 5 vybraných sloves: hacer, tener, poder, estar, ser ve tvaru první a zároveň třetí osoby singuláru subjunktivu budoucího času. Poslední část práce věnuje pozornost četnosti používání tohoto času od počátků španělštiny až po současnost a pomocí grafu se snaží vysvětlit některé tendence. Výsledky bádání naznačují určité rozdíly mezi předpoklady a realitou v korpusu a zároveň nastiňují odlišnosti v používání tohoto času v korpusu současné Španělštiny a v korpusu diachronickém.

Abstract:

The work intends to compare theoretical knowledge about the future subjunctive tense its occurrence in the CREA and CORDE, the corpuses of the Royal Spanish Academy and, as the title indicates, draw a comparison between its historical and current usage. In the beginning, the reader gets acquainted with fundamental characteristics of this verbal tense and contexts in which it may appear. Based on the knowledge there were established hypothesis which delimit the conditions under which the future subjunctive is found frecuently. The hypotheses are related to various factors. The linguistic factors deal with the types of clauses where the future subjunctive is used. The diatopic factors examine the countries that are considered survival areas of the phenomenon, whereas the diachronic factors look into time distribution. The last factors, the stylistic ones, study the usage of the future subjunctive from two approaches: oral discourse and topics. Although the analysis focuses mainly on the imperfect form of the future subjunctive, the end of each part is dedicated to the perfect one. The investigation was carried out in the corpuses of the Royal Spanish Academy CREA and CORDE via a group of 5 chosen verbs: hacer, tener, poder, estar, ser conjugated in the first and simultaneously third person of singular of the future subjunctive. The last part of the work pays attention to the chronological distribution of the future imperfect subjunctive from the origins of Spanish until the present day. The results of the investigation indicate certain discrepancies between the premises and the reality in the corpus besides the differences in usage of the future subjunctive in the corpus of current Spanish and the diachronic one.
