The impact of Russian sanctions on foreign trade

Abstract:

Reakcí na anexi Krymu v roce 2014 bylo uvalení série sankcí a proti sankcí mezi západními zeměmi a Ruskem, které korelují s výrazným poklesem cen ropy v roce 2015. Ve svém gravitačním modelu zahraničního obchodu se snažím tyto dva vlivy oddělit pomocí metody difference-in-differences za užití syntetické kontrolní skupiny skládající se z Kazachstánu, Kanady a Norska. Efekt sankcí jsem změřil ve výši 39% poklesu u importů potravin Ruska ze států EU. U celkových importů jsem statistickou významnost sankcí shledal až po omezení datového vzorku vyřazením tří nejmenších států EU, a to ve výši 9,6% poklesu.

Abstract:

A series of sanctions and retaliatory measures erupted between western countries and the Russian Federation as a reaction to the 2014 annexation of Crimea. These sanctions correlate with a sharp drop in oil prices in 2015. I try to separate these two effects in my gravity model of trade by using a difference-in-differences method with a synthetic control group consisting of Kazakhstan, Canada and Norway. I measured the effect of sanctions as a 39% decrease in Russian food imports from the EU. As for the total imports, I only found the effect of sanctions statistically relevant after restricting the data sample by dropping the three smallest EU states from it. The effect then amounted to a 9,6% decrease.
