The Impact of News about Coronavirus Spread on Stock Markets

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou vlivu zpráv o šíření koronaviru na výnosnost akciových trhů. Práce je postavena na předpokladu, že pozornost investorů vůči zprávám ovlivňuje výnosnost aktiv. Pro identifikaci vlivu zpráv o šíření koronaviru na akciové trhy je použita regresní analýza časových řad, přičemž je provedena pro různé geografické oblasti. V rámci regresní analýzy je zkoumána pozornost investorů měřená pomocí analýzy Google trends, počet nových případů nákazy a počet úmrtí v souvislosti s COVID-19 a index měřící přísnost vládních opatření v období pandemie. Z výsledků práce vyplývá, že na akciové trhy měla významný negativní vliv především pozornost investorů vůči zprávám o koronavirové pandemii a související negativní investiční sentiment. Výsledky práce se ale liší v závislosti na geografické oblasti. Trhy reagující odlišně na informace spojené s neočekávanými šoky mohou být využity k diverzifikaci portfolia.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the impact of news about the spread of coronavirus on stock market returns. The thesis is based on the assumption that investors' attention to the news affects asset returns. Time series regression analysis is used to identify the impact of news about coronavirus spread on stock markets, and it is performed for different geographical regions. The regression analysis examines investor attention as measured by Google trends analysis, the number of new cases and deaths related to COVID-19, and an index measuring the stringency of government measures during the pandemic. The results of this paper show that investor attention to news about coronavirus pandemic and associated negative investor sentiment had a significant negative impact on stock markets. However, the results of the paper vary by geographic region. Markets reacting differently to information associated with unexpected shocks can be used to portfolio diversification.
