SCRUM Tailoring: impacts of adapting elements of SCRUM agile methodology

Abstract:

Tématem práce je fenomén SCRUM Tailoring neboli šití metodiky SCRUM na míru. Metodika SCRUM je v praxi nejpoužívanější metodikou pro řízení projektů. Přesto se většina týmů neřídí podle oficiálního průvodce metodiky a nějakým způsobem si metodiku SCRUM z různých důvodů upravují. Některé úpravy metodiky SCRUM, které týmy často využívají mohou být nejen prospěšné, ale naopak i škodlivé. Hlavním cílem této práce je navrhnout doporučení pro zlepšení aktuálního stavu využívání fenoménu SCRUM Tailoring takovým způsobem, aby byly implementovány jen úpravy metodiky SCRUM, které jsou prospěšné a zároveň se eliminovaly úpravy, které jsou škodlivé. Návrh doporučení vychází ze zhodnocení fenoménu SCRUM Tailoring v rámci jeho využívanosti a prospěšnosti pro týmy, projekty a organizace. Zhodnocení fenoménu probíhalo prostřednictvím kvalitativního výzkumu pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s 8 zástupci z různých týmů, které se zabývají vývojem software a používají metodiku SCRUM. Jednotlivé týmy pochází z různých odvětví a organizací. Použitím tematické analýzy byly zkonstruovány výsledky výzkumu této práce. Výsledky výzkumu prezentují v rozsahu výzkumného vzorku 9 nejvíce používaných úprav metodiky SCRUM, 8 nejrozšířenějších důvodů k úpravám metodiky SCRUM, 11 základních dopadů úprav metodiky SCRUM, 5 nejvýznamnějších výhod a 5 nejčastějších nevýhod úprav metodiky SCRUM. Dopady úprav metodiky SCRUM jsou dále rozděleny na 4 pozitivní, 5 negativních a 2 neutrální dopady metodiky SCRUM. Na základě výsledků výzkumu je v práci navrženo doporučení ve formě modelu SCRUM Tailoring, které týmům napomáhá k navrhování a implementaci takových úprav, které jsou pro tým prospěšné.

Abstract:

The topic of this master thesis is a phenomenon called SCRUM Tailoring. The SCRUM methodology is the most used methodology for project management in practice. Despite that, most of the teams do not follow the official guide for the methodology and in some way modify the SCRUM methodology for various reasons. Some of these modifications of the SCRUM methodology that are often used may not be only beneficial, but also harmful. The main goal of this thesis is to propose a recommendation to improve the current state of usage of the SCRUM Tailoring phenomenon in a way, that will implement only those modifications of the SCRUM methodology that will be beneficial and at the same time help eliminate modifications that are harmful. The recommendation is based on evaluation of the current state of the SCRUM Tailoring phenomenon in terms of usage and utility for teams, projects, and companies. The evaluation of the SCRUM Tailoring phenomenon took place through qualitative research using semi-structured interviews with 8 representatives of different software development teams that use the SCRUM methodology. The teams come from various business industries and companies. By using thematic analysis, the research results were constructed for this thesis. The results of the research present in the scope of the research sample 9 most used modifications of the SCRUM methodology, 8 most common reasons to modifications of the SCRUM methodology, 11 elementary impacts of modifications of the SCRUM methodology, 5 most significant advantages and 5 most common disadvantages of modifications of the SCRUM methodology. The impacts of modifications of the SCRUM methodology are then categorized into 4 positive, 5 negative and 2 neutral impacts of modifications of the SCRUM methodology. Based on the research results, this thesis proposes a recommendation in the form of SCRUM Tailoring model which helps the teams to design and implement such modifications that are beneficial for the team.
