Assessing Language Proficiency: Comparative Study of Standardised Tests

Abstract:

This thesis deals with comparison of standardised tests of English language. The introductory chapter provides an insight into the field of language testing, its interrelationship with teaching, and different types of tests and testing. The theoretical part introduces criteria against which language tests should be measured, test specifications and different approaches to language testing with emphasis laid on communicative language testing. The last two chapters of the theoretical part introduce theoretical framework of communicative competence and test techniques, two categories which will be used as the basis for the research which will be carried out in the practical part of the thesis. The aim of the research is to compare standardised tests of English language on the basis of underlying theory of language testing and in the range of test techniques used. Findings of the research will be achieved through the content analysis of two standardised tests, FCE and Communicator.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na porovnání standardizovaných testů anglického jazyka. Úvodní kapitola poskytuje informace o testování, jeho propojení s procesem vyučování, a různých typech testů a testování. V teoretické části jsou popsána kritéria pro testování, specifikace testů a přístupy k testování s důrazem kladeným na komunikativní přístup. Poslední dvě kapitoly teoretické části představují teoretický rámec komunikativní kompetence a různé techniky používané k testování, což jsou kategorie, na jejichž základě je proveden výzkum v praktické části této diplomové práce. Cílem výzkumu je porovnání standardizovaných testů anglického jazyka na základě komunikativního přístupu k testování jazyků a v oblasti použitých testovacích technik s použitím obsahové analýzy dvou standardizovaných testů, FCE a Communicator.
