Petrological and geochemical characterisation of oolites around the Devonian/Carboniferous boundary

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na studium oolitů ze čtyř lokalit (La Serre, Francie; Gendron-Celles, Belgie a lomů Mokrá a Lesní lom, ČR) uložených v průběhu a po devonsko-karbonské hangenberské krizi. Oolity bývají řazeny mezi anachronistické facie – uloženiny spjaté s masovými vymíráními připomínající horniny z dob před vývojem metazoí. Oolity se řadí mezi anachronistické facie kvůli mikrobiálnímu původu ooidů, který je ale rozporován. V této práci byly vzorky podrobeny analýze metodami optické a elektronové mikroskopie ve snaze najít struktury a textury, které by dokládaly mikrobiální původ ooidů a dalších zrn. Protože ooidy zachycují environmentální podmínky z doby jejich vzniku, byly z nich (stejně tak jako z ostatních karbonátových komponent) získány pomocí LA-ICP-MS koncentrace prvků vzácných zemin a stopových prvků. Ty byly podrobeny statistické analýze a převedeny do podoby geochemických proxy za účelem a) získání informací ohledně redoxních podmínek a paleoproduktivity a změn původního signálu diagenezí či detritickým ovlivněním a b) porovnání geochemie ooidů a ostatních komponent a identifikace odlišných, potenciálně biogenních, geochemických signálů. Ačkoli mikrobiální struktury byly nalezeny v podobě fosilií Frutexites a Renalcis (Lesní lom) a chuchvalcovitých peloidů (La Serre a Gendron-Celles), v ooidech žádné typicky mikrobiální struktury rozpoznány nebyly. Při porovnání geochemických signálů z ooidů s ostatními komponentami se geochemie ooidů významně neliší a ooidy nesou podobné implikace, tedy: hydrotermální ovlivnění (La Serre LS70-1), substituci a diagenezi z pórových vod a/nebo meteorických fluid (La Serre LS78-1 a LS88), diagenezi fluidem ze studeného průsaku a autigenezi jílů ve vzorku z Lesního lomu, a relativně nealterovaný charakter vzorků z Mokré a Gendron-Celles. Na základě negativních anomálií ceru ve všech typech komponent byl zjištěn nedostatek kyslíku na všech studovaných lokalitách. Studované oolity obsahují místy hojné bioklasty metazoí a nelze je tak považovat za anachronistické facie s. s.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the examination of oolites deposited at four localities (La Serre, France; Gendron-Celles, Belgium, Mokrá and Lesní lom, Czech Republic) during and after the Devonian/Carboniferous Hangenberg Crisis. Oolites are often counted among the anachronistic facies – extinction-related sedimentary deposits which resemble rocks formed before the onset of metazoan life. Oolites are considered anachronistic due to the microbial origin of ooids which is, nevertheless, contested. In this thesis, oolite samples were analysed via the methods of optical and scanning electron microscopy in search of features that would document the microbial involvement in the formation of ooids and other grains. As ooids preserve past environmental conditions in their geochemistry, trace and rare earth element concentrations were extracted from ooids and other carbonate components via the LA-ICP-MS, statistically analysed and transformed into geochemical proxies in order to a) obtain information on the past redox conditions and productivity and recognise diagenetic or detrital signal distortion, and b) to compare the signatures from ooids to other components, looking for unusual, possibly biogenic signatures. Although microbial structures were recognised in the form of the Frutexites and Renalcis fossils (Lesní lom), and microbial clotted peloids (La Serre and Gendron-Celles), no clearly microbial features were found in ooids. When their geochemical signatures were compared to other components, ooids did not preserve outstanding signals and bore similar implications, that is attesting to: hydrothermal influence (La Serre LS70-1), substitution and diagenesis from porewaters and/or meteoric fluids (La Serre LS78-1 and LS88), diagenesis by a cold seep fluid and clay authigenesis in the Lesní lom sample, and relatively unaltered nature of the Mokrá and Gendron-Celles samples. The true negative cerium anomalies found in all component types indicate oxygen-deficient conditions at all localities. As metazoan bioclasts are abundant within the study oolites, they cannot be considered anachronistic in the strict sense of the word.
