Environmental control of diversity of Central European grasslands

Abstract:

Polopřirozená travinná vegetace střední Evropy se zásluhou působení přírodních podmínek i lidské činnosti vyvinula v rozmanitou mozaiku společenstev. Její závislost na člověku ji však také činí obzvláště náchylnou k degradaci a ochuzení o druhy v návaznosti na zásadní změny, které v poslední době hospodaření v krajině prodělává. Abychom byli schopni omezit negativní důsledky těchto změn, je nezbytné hlubší porozumění vztahu mezi prostředím a diverzitou travinné vegetace. Navzdory dlouhé tradici středoevropské fytocenologie, díky níž bylo popsáno velké množství společenstev, není z tohoto regionu mnoho studií, které by se přímo zabývaly složením vegetace a druhovou bohatostí ve vztahu k faktorům prostředí. Přitom jak z hlediska ochrany přírody, tak základního výzkumu je oblast střední Evropy nesmírně zajímavá už jen tím, že zde, konkrétně na bělokarpatských loukách, byly na některých škálách zaznamenány nejvyšší počty druhů cévnatých rostlin na světě. Hlavními cíli této práce je proto posoudit vliv půdních podmínek a dalších faktorů prostředí na diverzitu travinné vegetace a poodhalit, co stojí za neobyčejně velkou druhovou bohatostí bělokarpatských luk. Pomocí souběžné studie bělokarpatských společenstev měkkýšů se snažíme zjistit, zdali se výjimečné působení tamějších podmínek prostředí omezuje na rostliny, nebo je obecnější a týká se i jiných skupin organizmů. Modelovými typy vegetace byla společenstva v Jihlavských vrších, od suchých trávníků skalních výchozů po podmáčené louky, dále úzkolisté suché trávníky v Českém středohoří a na Křivoklátsku a poněkud vlhčí širokolisté trávníky Bílých Karpat, jižní Moravy a Vnitřních Západních Karpat. Jelikož rozsahy jednotlivých gradientů prostředí se mezi modelovými územími lišily a zájmová společenstva na nich zaujímala rozdílné pozice, odlišnosti byly i v tom, které faktory prostředí byly pro danou vegetaci nejdůležitější. V široce zaměřené studii zahrnující jak suché trávníky, tak podmáčené louky Jihlavských vrchů se druhové složení nejrychleji měnilo podél gradientu vlhkosti a až následně podél gradientu dostupnosti živin a půdního pH, zatímco ve studiích omezujících se na suché trávníky bylo pH půdy hlavním faktorem. Ve studii s dlouhým vlhkostním gradientem lokální druhová bohatost cévnatých rostlin klesala s obsahem fosforu, draslíku a organické hmoty v půdě; mezi druhově nejchudší patřila společenstva nejvlhčí a vyskytující se na silně kyselých půdách. Ve studiích suchých trávníků stoupala druhová bohatost s produkcí biomasy. Naproti tomu vztah mezi druhovou bohatostí a půdním pH nebyl jednotný – v úzkolistých suchých trávnících měl v závislosti na území buď unimodální nebo pozitivní průběh, zatímco v širokolistých trávnících měl průběh negativní. Počty druhů mechorostů a ohrožených druhů rostlin se řídily jinými pravidly než počty druhů cévnatých rostlin. Bělokarpatské louky byly soustavně druhově bohatší než obdobné typy travinné vegetace v přilehlých územích. Jediné studované faktory, kterými se ale od těchto přilehlých oblastí lišily, byly půdní pH a nadzemní biomasa. I tak ovšem byly při stejných hodnotách pH i biomasy bělokarpatské louky výrazně druhově bohatší než nejbohatší trávníky sousedních oblastí. Hodnoty dalších faktorů, ve kterých se Bílé Karpaty už nevymykaly, nicméně spadaly do rozmezí, která podle studií z jiných oblastí umožňují vysokou druhovou bohatost. Z malakologické analýzy vyplynulo, že vysoká lokální druhová bohatost měkkýšů, kterou jsme zaznamenali ve stejné části Bílých Karpat jako maximální počty rostlin, může být důsledkem společné

ho výskytu generalistů a specialistů v jednom společenstvu, což lze zřejmě připsat středním hodnotám hlavních faktorů prostředí v této oblasti. Počty druhů měkkýšů však ani tam nikterak nevybočují z čísel běžných pro střední Evropu, a tak lze říci, že působení faktorů, které podmiňují extrémní druhovou bohatost rostlin v bělokarpatských loukách, je zřejmě jedinečné pro rostlinná společenstva. Vyvozujeme tedy, že neobyčejně vysoká lokální druhová bohatost bělokarpatských luk je, spíše než dílem několika málo specifických podmínek prostředí, výsledkem výjimečné souhry mnoha okolností, které zahrnují faktory jak s lokální, tak s regionální působností.

Abstract:

Central European grasslands, as a semi-natural habitat in most cases, evolved under the influence of both natural conditions and human activities into an extremely diversified mosaic of plant communities. However, their dependence on human activites also makes them vulnerable to deterioration and species loss, as we witness recently, when rapid changes in human impact on environment take place. To prevent or mitigate such effects, it is crucial to understand the role of enviroment for grassland diversity. Yet, despite the long and fruitful tradition of phytosociological research in Central Europe, studies from this region directly relating grassland vegetation composition and species richness to environmental factors are rather rare. The fact that for certain spatial scales records of the highest concentration of vascular plant species worldwide come from this region, specifically from the White Carpathian Mts, is inspirative from the point of view of both nature conservation and fundamental ecological research. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the relationships of grassland diversity to measured soil properties and other environmental variables and searches for causes of the unusually high species richness of the White Carpathian grasslands. A parallel analysis of White Carpathian snail communities attempts to reveal whether conditions conducive to high species richness are specific to plants, or more general and relevant also to other groups of organisms. Model habitats studied in this thesis ranged from rock-outcrop dry grasslands to wet meadows in the Jihlavské vrchy Hills, dry grasslands in the České středohoří Mts and Křivoklát region, and semi-dry grasslands in the White Carpathians, southern Moravia and Inner Western Carpathians. Because the ranges of environmental gradients differed among the study areas and target grassland types, order of their importance for driving species composition was not identical: moisture gradient was the main determinant of compositional change in a broad-range study encompassing dry grasslands to wet meadows, followed by nutrient availability together with soil pH, whereas the gradient of soil pH became dominant in studies focusing solely on dry or semi-dry grasslands. Across the long moisture gradient local species richness of vascular plants decreased with increasing phosphorus, potassium and organic matter in soil; species-poorest habitats were acidic and very wet. Within both areas of dry and semi-dry grasslands, high-productive communities were richest in species. By contrast, the shape of the relationship between species richness and pH varied among study areas, being either unimodal or positive in the two dry grassland regions (České středohoří Mts and Křivoklát region), and negative in the semi-dry grassland region (White Carpathians). Bryophytes and Red List species displayed different diversity patterns from vascular plants. While grasslands of the White Carpathians were consistently richer in plant species than analogous grasslands in adjacent regions, the only studied factors with significantly different values between the regions were soil pH and above-ground biomass. Yet, sites from the White Carpathians were richer in species than the sites from the adjacent regions with the same values of these factors. Though not different between regions, values of other measured local factors fell into ranges reported in the literature as favourable for high plant richness in grasslands. For snails, intermediate environmental conditions enabling co-occurrence of both generalist and specialist species are probably the key determinant of the highest local richness, which we found in the same part of the White Carpathians where peak numbers of plants were recorded. The numbers of snails are however not extraordinarilly high in the context of Central Europe, and so conditions contributing to extreme species richness of the White Carpathian grasslands seem to be specifically

relevant to plant communities. We propose that rather than resulting from a few environmental conditions unique to the area, the unusually high local species richness of the White Carpathians is a product of a peculiar combination of many factors, operating at local as well as regional scale.
