New Historicism and the Interpretation of Elizabethan Drama - Analysis in the Context of Current Theories of Interpretation

Abstract:

Záměrem diplomové práce je kritická analýza nového historismu, směru literární interpretace, se zaměřením na práci jeho čelního představitele Stephena Greenblatta. Práce se zabývá charakteristickou nového historismu a analýzou jeho metod a specifického přístupu k textu, který zahrnuje snahu číst díla v v jejich historickém a sicuálním kontextu, který je utvářen a následně sám ovlivňuje neustálý tok moci. Práce se také věnovuje komparaci s jinými teoretickými proudy 20. století z hlediska inspirace a společných charakteristik, včetně rozdílností novohistorické metodologie a jejich cílů, a to například s marxismem, feminismem, postkoloniálními studiemi či psychoanalýzou, které se ve svých pojetích literární teorie také věnovaly dílu Williama Shakespeara. Závěrečná část práce se zabývá kritickou analýzou Greenblattových interpretačních metod a závěrů v rámci čtyř Shakespearových her.

Abstract:

The thesis aims to provide an analysis of the New Historicist interpretation of Elizabethan drama, represented especially in the works of Stephen Greenblatt. The thesis deals with main characteristics, methods and specifics of the New Historicist approach to the texts, which include an attempt to read the work through the optic of its historical and social context, created and reciprocally influenced by the ever-present flow of power. It also outlines and compares some of the dominant literary theories of the 20th century, for example Marxism, psychoanalysis, feminism and post-colonial studies within their interpretation of Shakespeare´s work. The last part of the thesis is mainly a critical analysis of Greenblatt´s specific interpretative methods and his conclusions within four plays of Shakespeare.
