Differences in lion feeding behaviour depending on feeding technique

Abstract:

Lvi (Panthera leo) patří k nejčastěji chovaným velkým šelmám v zoologických zahradách, a proto je důležité neustále zlepšovat naše porozumění jejich potřebám a jejich životní pohodě (welfare). Tato diplomová práce se zaměřila na variace v potravním chování lvů chovaných v zoologických zahradách v České republice v závislosti na technice krmení, konkrétně na frekvenci nabízení potravy. Pochopení potravního chování lvů v lidské péči je klíčové pro zajištění životní pohody lvů a vytváření podmínek, které co nejvíce odpovídají jejich přirozeným potřebám. Cílem této práce bylo prostřednictvím pozorování a hodnocení lvů ve vybraných českých zoologických zahradách zjistit, zda a jak ovlivňuje frekvence krmení jejich aktivitu a výskyt stereotypního chování, které je často spojováno se sníženou životní pohodou. Diplomová práce porovnávala dvě skupiny lvů chovaných v zoologických zahradách s nízkou (jednou týdně) a vysokou (dvakrát až třikrát týdně) frekvencí krmení. K hodnocení welfare a chování lvů bylo použito posouzení životní pohody (welfare assessment), hodnocení tělesné kondice (body condition scoring) a etogram zaměřený na aktivní, klidové a stereotypní chování. Výsledky studie neprokázaly statisticky významný rozdíl v celkovém welfare skóre ani v tělesné kondici mezi lvy krmenými způsobem nízké a vysoké frekvence nabízení potravy, ačkoliv byl zaznamenán numerický trend naznačující mírně lepší welfare u lvů krmených způsobem nižší frekvence nabízení potravy. Klíčovým zjištěním bylo statisticky významně vyšší množství stereotypního chování u lvů s vyšší frekvencí krmení, zatímco aktivita byla vyšší v krmné dny bez ohledu na frekvenci. Práce zdůrazňuje důležitost techniky krmení pro welfare lvů v zoologických zahradách. Vyšší výskyt stereotypií u častěji krmených lvů naznačuje, že pro jejich pohodu je nutné zohlednit i behaviorální aspekty spojené s potravou, nejen její množství. Studie přispívá k lepšímu porozumění potřeb lvů chovaných v lidské péči a může být podkladem pro zlepšení chovatelských postupů. Je však třeba mít na paměti omezení vyplývající z malého vzorku zoologických zahrad zahrnutých v této studii a nutnost dalšího výzkumu.

Abstract:

Lions (Panthera leo) are among the most frequently kept large carnivores in zoological gardens, and therefore it is important to continuously improve our understanding of their needs and welfare. This diploma thesis focused on variations in the feeding behaviour of lions housed in zoological gardens in the Czech Republic depending on the feeding technique, specifically the frequency of food offering. Understanding the feeding behaviour of lions in human care is key to ensuring their well-being and creating conditions that correspond as closely as possible to their natural needs. The aim of this work was to determine, through observation and evaluation of lions in selected Czech zoological gardens, whether and how the frequency of feeding influences their activity and the occurrence of stereotypic behaviour, which is often associated with reduced well-being. To compare the effect of feeding frequency, the diploma thesis compared two groups of lions kept in zoological gardens with low (once a week) and high (2-3 times a week) feeding frequencies. To evaluate the welfare and behaviour of the lions, an assessment of life comfort (welfare assessment), body condition scoring, and an ethogram focused on active, resting, and stereotypic behaviour were used. The results of the study did not show a statistically significant difference in the overall welfare score or body condition between lions fed using low and high feeding frequencies, although a numerical trend towards slightly better welfare was recorded in lions fed using a lower feeding frequency. The key finding was a statistically significantly higher amount of stereotypic behaviour in lions with a higher feeding frequency, while activity was higher on feeding days regardless of the frequency. The work emphasises the importance of feeding technique for the welfare of lions in zoological gardens. The higher occurrence of stereotypies in more frequently fed lions suggests that for their well-being, it is necessary to take into account behavioural aspects related to food, not only its quantity. The study contributes to a better understanding of the needs of lions kept in human care and can serve as a basis for improving husbandry practices. However, it is necessary to bear in mind the limitations resulting from the small sample of zoological gardens included in this study and the necessity for further research.
