The Use Of Cognitive Heuristics Throughout The Life Span And Their Relation To Thinking Styles

Abstract:

Respondentům (n=150), které můžeme rozdělit do pěti věkových kategorií (žáci základní školy, studenti střední školy a vysoké školy, dospělí nad 26 let a senioři starší 65 let), byly předloženy dva dotazníky: námi sestavený dotazník kognitivních heuristik a Sternberg-Wagnerův inventář stylů myšlení. Nejmenší tendenci k náchylnosti k efektům heuristik lze pozorovat u studentů VŠ a dospělých.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the use of cognitive heuristics throughout the life span and their relation to thinking styles. It responds to the lack of research in this area. The theoretical part is devoted to human thinking in general, its development, cognitive heuristics (anchoring, availability and representativeness heuristics and the conjunction fallacy) and Sternberg's thinking styles. In the practical part we describe our research. We have chosen a form of questionnaire inquiry. Two questionnaires (questionnaire of cognitive heuristics and Sternberg-Wagner's Thinking Styles Inventory) were submitted to respondents (n = 150), who can be divided into five age groups (primary school pupils, high school and university students, adults over 26 and seniors over 65 years): Results of this research show that the influence of age and preferred style of thinking is different due to different types of cognitive heuristics. The influence of the thinking style has been demonstrated only with the anchoring heuristic. We can generally say that age had an impact on the accuracy of one's estimates. The smallest tendency to susceptibility to the effects of heuristics can be observed among university students and adults.
