Psychological Correlates of Glutamate and GABA Levels in the Right Anterior Insula

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumala potenciální koreláty neurotransmitterů v pravé přední insule lidského mozku. Pomocí magneticko-rezonanční spektroskopie (MRS) byly zjištěny hladiny glutamátu a kyseliny gama-aminomáselné (GABA). Psychologické koreláty byly hledány v doménách metakognice, interocepce, anomálních zážitků a každodenních kognitivních selhání. Nebyly nalezeny žádné statisticky významné korelace se samotnými hladinami neurotransmitterů a ve většině případů byla naopak na základě bayesovských analýz podpořena nulová hypotéza. Explorace dat byla nad rámec prostých korelací doplněna lasso regresí a kvantifikací interakcí pomocí interpretovatelného strojového učení.

Abstract:

This thesis examined potential correlates of neurotransmitters in the right anterior insula of the human brain. Using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), levels of glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) were determined. Psychological correlates were searched for in the domain of metacognition, interoception, anomalous experiences and everyday cognitive failures. No statistically significant correlations with the neurotransmitter levels themselves were discovered and in most cases, the null hypothesis was supported by Bayesian analyses. Data exploration was in addition to simple correlations supplemented by lasso regression and interaction quantification using interpretable machine learning.
