Tato práce se v první části snaží o vysvětlení pojmu "muzikál" a shrnutí stručné historie amerického muzikálu s akcentací některých důležitých a přelomových muzikálových produkcí. Dále se práce v první části snaží nastínit divadelní, hudebně-divadelní i čistě hudební formy, ze kterých muzikál, jak ho dnes známe, čerpá. In first section this thesis is trying to explain the definition of "musical" and to sum up the brief history of American musical with accentuation of some important and interesting musical productions. Further it is trying to highlight some theatrical, musical-theatrical and pure musical genres from which the musical as we know it today draws.
